CINCINNATI STEAM vs. LICKING COUNTY SETTLERS

HAYDEN FIELD - The Cincinnati Steam took over sole possession of first place in the South Division sweeping the Licking County Settlers in a double header played at Xavier University.

 

The Steam snapped the Settlers four-game winning streak to start the season with a 6-3 victory in the opener. 

 

The Settlers, who was looking forward to its first ever 5-0 start, took a 2-0 lead in the early going scoring single runs in the first and third innings. Adam Crawford (California University of Pennsylvania) crossed the plate both times, first on a Cincinnati throwing error then on a bases loaded walk.

 

The Steam exploded for six runs in the fourth inning with the big blow being a three-run home run off the bat of catcher Kory Klingenbeck (Walters State).

 

Cincinnati batted around sending nine men to the plate during the scoring barrage. Brennan Rowe (Northern Kentucky) started the inning with an RBI-double and Luke Houin (Saint Leo) produced a two-run single.

 

Licking County made a valiant effort in the final inning with Nick Lukac (University of Dayton) smacking a double driving in Chase Whisner (Wittenberg).

 

Nick Falter (Denison University) closed the door on the Settlers rally earning his first save of the season for the Steam.

 

Licking County could not take advance of four Cincinnati errors as the Settlers left nine runners on base in the opener.

 

In the night cap Cincinnati (5-1) run-ruled Licking County (4-2) by a score of 11-1 in five innings.

 

 

GRAND LAKE MARINERS  11  RICHMOND JAZZ  10

McBRIDE STADIUM - The Grand Lake Mariners scored three times in the ninth inning winning in come-from-behind fashion 11-10 over the Richmond Jazz at historic McBride Stadium.

 

The Jazz, who were marred by mistakes throughout the game, committing six errors over the course of the game.

 

Grand Lake (3-3) benefited from two of the those errors in the ninth inning loading the bases while trailing 9-8. The Mariners would go on to score three runs without the benefit of a hit.

 

Benjamin Sterrit (Lakeland CC) was walked with the bases loaded forcing in a run tying the game 9-9. 

 

Jacob Danneman (Hanover College) gave the Mariners the lead 10-9 when he scored from third base on a passed ball. 

 

Grand Lake pushed across an insurance run making the score 11-9 when Andrew Nykoluk (Loyola Marymount) scored on a fielder’s choice.

 

The Jazz rallied in its half of the ninth scoring Jojuan Wimbley (Savannah State) on a bases loaded fielder’s choice of its own shaving Grand Lake’s lead to 11-10. 

 

Zach Boyer (New Mexico JC) came in for the Mariners with two outs looking for his second save of the season. Boyer recorded the final out stranding the bases full of Jazz base runners.

 

Richmond (1-4) at one point took the lead 7-3 thanks in part to a 6-run second inning. The big blow was a grand slam off the bat of Austin Dearing (State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota). The grand salami was Dearing’s third home run of the season.

 

 

SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  8  XENIA SCOUTS  5

GRADY’S FIELD - The Southern Ohio Copperheads needed a three-run home run from Kyle Ratliff (SIU-Edwardsville) in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Xenia Scouts 8-5 at Grady’s Field.

 

The Scouts (1-4) tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Blaze Bell (UT Martin) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Ross Smith (Metro State). That was followed by Matthew Earley (Franklin College) scoring from third base on a passed ball tying the score.

 

This only set the stage for Ratliff to be the hero for Southern Ohio (4-2).

 

With one out in the ninth inning, Gunnar Aldridge (Michigan State) and Ashton Thomas (Flagler) reached base on back-to-back walks. Ratliff sent a pitch into the Xenia sky and over the center field wall for the game winner.

 

Jarrett Oakes (USC-Sumpter) came in the bottom of the ninth slamming the door for the Copperheads earning the save.

 

Due to power outages throughout the Xenia area due to heavy storms the night before there was no power on the Athletes in Action Complex when the game began. Once needed the lights were turned on prevented any further delay.

 

 

MICHIGAN MONARCHS  4  JET BOX BASEBALL CLUB  2

SIENNA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY - The Michigan Monarchs (5-2) were the last team play its home opener and wait was well worth as they beat the Jet Box Baseball Club (3-5) by a score of 4-2.

 

Reece Longstaff hit a home run in bottom of 3rd inning giving Monarchs 2-0 lead.

 

Kevin Korte (Saginaw Valley State) was given credit for the victory and Keaton Ballard (Davenport) earned the save.

 

 

SANDUSKY BAY ICE HAULERS  9  MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  3

SPORTS FORCE PARK FIELD #3 - The Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers (3-4) continue its home stand with an impressive 9-3 win over the visiting Muskegon Clippers (3-4).

 

The Ice Haulers sent 13 batters to the plate in the 4th inning scoring eights runs putting the game out of reach.

 

Brady Renfro (Valparaiso) drove in RBIs during two different at bats during the inning. Renfro doubled driving in Eli Snider (seton Hill) the first run of the frame. He later hit a sacrifice fly scoring Garret Pike (Toledo).

 

Alec Mendoza (Notre Dame College) would not be out done in the inning smashing a base loaded double plating all three RBIs.

 

Sandusky Bay pitching was impressive on this night as two pitchers combined holding Muskegon batters to just two hits on the night.

 

Spencer Nelson (Grand Valley State) took advantage of one of the few mistakes made by Ice Haulers pitching belting a three-run home in the third inning.

 

Gage Gillott (USC Upstate) went seven innings, striking out seven batters, on his way to earning the victory. Tyler Munroe (Abilene Christian) tossed the final two innings securing the win.

 

ROYAL OAK LEPRECHAUNS  6  LIMA LOCOS  0

SIMMONS FIELD - The Royal Oak Leprechauns (3-4) went into Simmons Field and knocked the Lima Locos (4-3) off the rails with a 6-0 shutout win.

 

Four Royal Oak pitchers combined for the three-hit shutout of the usually hard hitting Locos lineup. It took until the sixth inning for Lima to get its first hit of the game.

 

Alex Cole (Northwood University) singled in the second inning scoring Jacob Yarberry (Coker University) from third base.

 

Royal Oak scored four runs in the seventh inning putting the game out of reach. Eli Hopkins and Yarberry, his college teammate from Coker, each contributed RBI-singles. Reese Trahey (Michigan State), who had a team-high three hits, doubled scoring Yarberry.

 

The Leprechauns added a tack-on run in the eighth inning when Chase Franzen (Youngstown State) smacked a triple driving in Connor McClennen (Saginaw Valley State).

 

Joseph Herrick (Akron) got the start on the mound throwing four hitless innings for the Leprechauns. 

 

Zachary Abbey (Northwood University) earned the victory bridging the gap to the late innings with two strong frames out of the bullpen.

 

Sean Berg (Tiffin) and Nicholas Soller (Northwestern Ohio) combined for the final three innings finishing the deal for the Leprechauns.

 

 

ABOUT THE GREAT LAKES SUMMER COLLEGIATE LEAGUE 

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league currently consists of 13 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
