LICKING COUNTY  4  HAMILTON JOES  3  -  SUDDEN DEATH

FOUNDATION FIELD - The Licking County Settlers knocked the Hamilton Joes out of first place in the South Division winning a back-and-forth affair in sudden death 4-3 at Foundation Field.

 

Hamilton chose to be on defense in the sudden death frame promptly loading the bases and forcing in the winning run on a hit by pitch.

 

Turner Gill (Marietta College) was the ghost runner placed on first base and he quickly stole second base. Drew Garth (Seton Hill) laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line reaching safely without a throw to either base.

 

With runners on the corners, the Joes elected to intentionally walk Adam Crawford (California University of Pennsylvania) loading the bases with no one out. 

 

This set up a force play at any base with Nick Lukac (University of Dayton) coming to the plate. Joes pitcher Taegan Bourque (LSU-Eunice) struck out Lukac in a stress filled seven-pitch at bat for the first out.

 

Logan White (Capital University) was next up and he has hit by the first pitch forcing Gill in from third base for the walk off celebration.

 

The Joes tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning forcing the overtime format. 

 

Bennett Clement (LSU-Eunice) singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Clay Badylak (Frontier CC) hit a hot smash to shortstop which was back handed cleanly by Lukac. Bennett broke for home beating the throw sliding underneath the catcher’s tag for the game tying run.

 

Settlers reliever Logan Swonger (Tiffin University) was able to strike out Riley Hawthorne (Murray State) in the bottom of the ninth forcing extra innings.

 

Chase Hopewell was dominate for the Joes throwing four and 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Hopewell struck out nine batters, walking three and did not surrender a hit.

 

The Joes fall into a tie for second place with the Settlers and the Cincinnati Steam who all now have identical 14-12 records.

 

 

XENIA SCOUTS  11  RICHMOND JAZZ  0  -  7 Innings

GRADY’S FIELD - The Xenia Scouts landed into the penthouse of the South Division standings with a convincing 11-0 run-rule victory over the visiting Richmond Jazz.

 

Colby Gromlich (Millersville University) tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout giving up just four hits in the process. Gromlich held the Jazz offense in check striking out eight while walking just one batter. The Xenia right hander needed 88 pitches improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

 

The Scouts offense had many different heroes on this night. Jarrett Eaton (South Florida) was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

 

Ross Smith (Metro State) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBIs. Tyler Haskins had two hits (Fairmont State) including a bases clearing double driving in three RBIs.

 

Xenia now leads the division for the first time this season. The Scouts are now 14-11 after starting the season with a 3-7 record.

 

The Jazz fell to 13-13 on the season not being able to continue the momentum of sweeping the Hamilton Joes in the previous three games.

 

 

CINCINNATI STEAM  8  GRAND LAKE MARINERS  4 

MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Cincinnati Steam was able to quietly remain in the playoff conversation with an 8-4 road victory over the Grand Lake Mariners.

 

The Steam (14-12) set the tone early scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Max Fries (Earlham College) and Josh Hegemann (University of Cincinnati) each hit three-run home runs in the opening half inning. 

 

Cincinnati enjoyed a 13-hit performance with Will Jaun (Cornell) leading the way with three base knocks. 

 

The Mariners (11-14) made chances as they compiled nine hits but stranded nine runners on base.

 

Grand Lake’s Manny Vorhees (Northern Kentucky) was 3-for-4 at the plate hitting his second home run of the season.

 

Nick Falter (Denison University) went four and 1/3 innings out for the bullpen getting the win for the Steam. Falter registered five strikeouts while scattering four hits and only giving up one run.

 

 

MICHIGAN MONARCHS  5  MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  1

SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY - The Michigan Monarchs keep on keeping on extending its first place lead taking down the Muskegon Clippers 5-1.

 

Michigan (16-10) now has the best overall record in the GLSCL after winning its seventh game in its last eight contests. The Monarchs are one and a half games ahead of the rest of the pace in the North Division standings.

 

Reece Longstaff (Arizona Western College) who leads the GLSCL with a .379 batting average, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

 

Henry Brown (Indiana State) also had a big game for the Monarchs. Brown was 3-for-4 with a double and his fourth home run of the season.

 

Brendan Moran (Wheeling Jesuit) got the start for the Monarchs going four shutout innings striking out five innings but did not qualify for the win.

 

Jack Elkins (Jackson CC) and Carson Caudill (Frontier CC) each threw one of the middle innings with Elkins being awarded the victory.

 

Nick Powers (Michigan State) pitched the final three innings earning his first save of the season. Powers struck out six batters while only giving up one run, one walk and two hits.

 

The Clippers (12-15) were held to five hits by a combination of four Monarchs pitchers. Colin Cornwell (Saginaw Valley State) and Nelson Phillips (Iowa Western CC transfer) each provided two hits.

 

The Monarchs, who are now guaranteed the series win, goes for the sweep on Thursday in front of the home crowd at the Siena Heights University Baseball Diamond.

 

 

ROYAL OAK LEPRECHAUNS  3   SANDUSKY BAY ICE HAULERS  2  -  10 Innings  

SPORTS FORCE PARK FIELD #3 - The Royal Oak Leprechauns scored a run in the top of the tenth inning taking home a 3-2 road victory over the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers.

 

Gavin Ganun (Bowling Green State) reached base with one out in the tenth on a ground rule double. He came around to score the go-ahead run on an RBI-single by his college teammate Zack Horky.

 

Matthew DeFay (Kellogg CC), who pitched a season-high five innings out of the bullpen for the Leprechauns, slammed the door in the bottom of the tenth. DeFay retired the Ice Haulers in order for his first victory of the season. DeFay didn’t give up a run scattering three hits while striking out six and only walking one batter.

 

Royal Oak scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Eli Hopkins (Coker University) singled and eventually scored on an RBI-groundout by Reese Trahey (Michigan State). Drew Henig (Madonna University) crossed the plate after Chase Franken (Youngstown State) reached on an error.

 

The Ice Haulers matched those two runs in the fourth inning with a two-run single off the bat of Brady Renfro (Valparaiso University).

 

Sandusky Bay (14-12) looks to gain the ground it has lost in the standings as the Ice Haulers find themselves two games out of first place. 

 

The Leprechauns (10-16) look to play the spoiler role with the two teams battling it out for the series win on Thursday.

 

 

JET BOX BASEBALL CLUB  vs.  LIMA LOCOS  -  POSTPONED

MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL - The Jet Box Baseball Club versus Lima Locos game scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed due to weather conditions. The two teams will make it up with a double header on Thursday at Jet Box’s home field at Milford High School.
