LICKING COUNTY SETTLERS  vs.  SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS - DH

BIG RED FIELD  - The Licking County Settlers enter the all-star break in first place after sweeping the Southern Ohio Copperheads at Big Red Field. The Settlers took the opener 5-2 and completed the sweep winning the night cap 2-1.

 

Licking County (18-12) is now a full game ahead of the Hamilton Joes in the South Division standings. 

 

Nick Lukac (University of Dayton) went 2-for-4 in the opener with a double and three RBIs. Jack Rando was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

 

Drew Garth (Seton Hill) and Caileb Johnson (Purdue Fort Wayne) making his Settlers debut, each had two hits in the opener.

 

The Copperheads scored both of its runs in the third inning on a two-run single by Carson Shepard (Ohio University).

 

The second game was a low scoring affair that the Settlers pulled out in the end.

 

Logan White (Capital University) singled in the fifth inning driving in Johnson breaking a scoreless tie.

 

The Copperheads tied the score 1-1 in the sixth inning when Mason Nadolney (Concordia University) doubled coming around to score on an RBI-single by Maverick Stallings (St. John’s River State College).

 

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ben Kaplin (Marietta College) smacked a walk off double scoring Ryan Davis (Adrian College) all the way from first base capping off the sweep.

 

The two losses dropped Southern Ohio to an 11-16 record on the season.

 

 

GRAND LAKE MARINERS  2  HAMILTON JOES  0 

MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Grand Lake Mariners shut out the first place Hamilton Joes holding them to just two hits in a 2-0 victory in front of its home fans at Montgomery Field.

 

Four Grand Lake pitchers held the Joes to just two hits on the night. Timothy Knapschaefer (Ohio Northern) got the start earning the win with five shutout innings. He struck out six batters giving up just one hit which was the only base runner he allowed.

 

Clark Gilmore (Dartmouth College) and Zach Boyer (New Mexico JC) bridged the gap getting the ball into the closer’s hand. 

 

Ethan Bobo (Lincoln Memorial) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Mariners earning his GLSCL leading fifth save of the season.

 

Jackson Tower (Dartmouth College) reached base on three walks and scoring the game’s only two runs for Grand Lake (14-16). 

 

The Joes fell to 17-13 on the season and go into the all-star break in second place one game behind Licking County.

 

 

CINCINNATI STEAM  7  XENIA SCOUTS  5 

GRADY’S FIELD - The Cincinnati Steam held on for dear life as the Xenia Scouts rallied in the ninth inning hanging on to win 7-5 at Grady’s Field.

 

The Steam (16-13) led 7-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Xenia (15-15) scored four runs and were threatening for more when Cincinnati recorded the final out of the game.

 

Back-to-back doubles by Evan Fragela (University of Pittsburgh-Bradford) and Tommy Rover (Fresno Pacific) got things started for the Scouts. 

 

Ross Smith (Metro State) and Matthew Earley (Franklin College) connected on an RBI-singles sandwiched around a run scoring error committed by the Steam.

 

All this happened before an out was recorded with the Scouts shaving the Steam’s lead to 7-5. Xenia had the bases loaded when Chase Mulligan (Motlow State CC) saved the day for the Steam.

 

Mulligan squashed the rally with a strikeout, pop out and another strikeout stranding the bases loaded with the winning run on base.

 

Luke Hammond (Xavier University) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Steam.

 

Zach Weber (Ohio University) got the victory pitching seven scoreless innings for Cincinnati giving up just two hits and not walking a batter.

 

Cincinnati goes into the all-star break in third place in the South Division standings one and a half games ahead of the fourth place Scouts.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The league currently consists of 13 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
