LIMA LOCOS  3  GRAND LAKE MARINERS  2 - FINAL/11 Innings 

MONTGOMERY FIELD - After back-to-back blowout wins, the Lima Locos won an extra inning tiebreaker thriller over the Grand Lake Mariners at Montgomery Field by a score of 3-2. 

 

The score was tied 2-2 after 10 innings of play when the game went into the new GLSCL tiebreaker for the 11th inning. As the home team, Grand Lake had the option and chose to take the field attempting to prevent the Locos from scoring to win the game.

 

The Locos sent Caleb Edwards-Dugan (Lourdes University) to the plate as a pinch hitter and Eduarny Martinez (Cochise College) at first base as the ghost runner.

 

Edwards-Dugan smacked an opposite field single to right field advancing Martinez to third base. Anthony Zarlingo (Southwest Tennessee CC), who was 0-for-3 previously at the plate, delivered a sacrifice fly to right field driving in Martinez for the winning run.

 

The Locos benefited from a strong contribution from relief pitcher Kaden Arn (Bowling Green State). Arn pitched four innings out of the bullpen before running out of gas in the tenth inning. Arn gave up just one run on four hits and striking out a game high eight batters.

Micah Takac (Mercer University) came in to the game bailing Arn out of a no outs jam in the tenth inning. Takac recording two strikeouts and a fly out stranding two Mariners runners in scoring position.

 

The Locos got off to an early 1-0 advantage when Connor Ashby (Kent State) launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning.

 

The Mariners answered in the bottom of the first when Aaron Walton’s (Samford University) sacrifice fly drove in Hayden Robbins (Morehead State) from third base.

 

Lima recaptured the lead loading the bases on back-to-back walks followed by an infield hit. Mason Sawyer (Ohio State) scored the go ahead run from third on a throwing error committed by the Mariners when Ashby grounded into a fielder's choice.

 

Grand Lake tied the game again 2-2 in the sixth when Mariners catcher Lucas Stelle (Samford University) hit a bomb over the right field fence. Steele was the game’s most productive hitter going 3-for-5 at the plate with the home run and a double.

 

The Mariners got solid pitching out of its bullpen from a pair of unsuspecting candidates.

 

Evan Weaver (West Virginia State), who is a catcher by trade, threw two and 1/3 shutout innings. Weaver, who gave up just one hit and one walk, keeping the Locos off balance with a steady diet of off speed pitches.

 

Ivan Hoyt (Dartmouth College), who was making his season debut for Grand Lake, started the game as the left fielder. The two-way threat during the spring for the Big Green pitched the final three innings holding the Locos at bay until the fateful tiebreaker inning.

 

The Locos (7-3) won three games out of four taking the series against the Mariners (3-6) in a battle involving the GLSCL’s oldest rivalry.

 

MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  3  MICHIGAN MONARCHS  2 

MARSH FIELD - The Muskegon Clippers coming off a couple of days won its seventh straight game with a 3-2 walk off victory over the Michigan Monarchs.

 

The winning streak was in jeopardy as the Clippers trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. 

 

Muskegon was down to its final out with runners on first and second base. Aaron Piasecki (Kellogg CC) clobbered a single driving in Stoney Smith (Chattanooga St Tech CC) with the tying run and Colin Cornell (Saginaw Valley State) with the winning run in front of a joyous crowd at Marsh Field.

 

The walk off hit by Piasecki capped off of 3-for-4 performance on the way to being the hero for the Clippers.

 

Muskegon (7-0) remains the only undefeated team in the GLSCL.

 

The Monarchs (4-5) struck first when Silas Butler (Cumberland University) delivered an RBI-double in the third inning scoring Jake Dresselhouse (Michigan State) from second base.

 

The Clippers answered in the bottom of the third inning evening the score 1-1. Luke Kerrins (Western Michigan) led off the inning with a base hit and came around to score on a single by Aidan Arbogast (Eastern Michigan).

 

Michigan regained the lead in the sixth when Clippers starter Matthew Hoover (Western Michigan) ran into trouble. Hoover allowed two base runners before departing the the game.

 

Dresselhouse came to the plate for the Monarchs facing Muskegon reliever Charlie Branch (Lincoln Trail College). Branch uncorked a wild pitch allowing Cooper Vance (Eastern Michigan) to score the go ahead run from third base.

 

Jack Decker (Saginaw Valley State) came into the game recording the final out in the sixth inning for the Clippers. Decker pitched three and 1/3 hitless innings improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

 

Hoover, the reigning GLSCL Pitcher of the Week, struck out eight batters over the course of his five and 1/3 innings of work, getting a no-decision for his troubles.

 

CINCINNATI STEAM  18  XENIA SCOUTS  16 

GRADY’S FIELD - The Cincinnati Steam went to Grady’s Field at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex winning a slug fest over the first place Xenia Scouts 18-16.

 

Despite the loss the Scouts (7-1) still enjoys a two game lead over the second place Steam (5-4) and the Richmond Jazz in the South Division standings.

 

The Steam accumulated 18 hits on the night with four different batters racking up three hits.

 

Hayden Christiansen (Xavier University) was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

 

Max Fries (Earlham College) and Brennan Rowe (Northern Kentucky) each went 3-for-6 for Cincinnati. Fries had two doubles and three runs scored while Rowe went for a two-RBI double in the sixth inning.

 

Sean Springer (University of Cincinnati) drove in a game-high four RBIs during his 3-for-4 night.

 

Kaden Wu (Belmont University) had quite a day at the plate for the Scouts. The Xenia catcher went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and three runs scored.

 

Anthony Hausner (The Citadel) went 3-for-6 including a double and a three-run homer.

 

ROYAL OAK LEPRECHAUNS  8  RICHMOND JAZZ  1 

McBRIDE STADIUM - The Royal Oak Leprechauns bounced back  on the road defeating the Richmond Jazz 8-1 at historic McBride Stadium. The win gave the Leprechauns the series victory winning three out of four in the four-game home-and-home series.

 

Royal Oak scored four runs in the second inning and never looked back. Ryan Callanan (San Bernardino Valley College) and Joshua Getz (Northwood University) each provided RBI-singles. John Oberson (Murray State) followed that by driving in two RBIs on a base hit capping off the rally.

 

The Leprechauns added two more runs in the third inning extending its lead to 6-0.

 

The Jazz (5-4) scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Drew Dillon (Purdue Fort Wayne) reached on a two-out walk advancing to second with a stolen base. Dillon came around to score on an RBI-single by Jordan McKenzie (Wilson College).

 

Jayden Lopez (California Riverside) answered for Royal Oak in the sixth inning with an RBI-double scoring Colin Overholt (Ashland University). Lopez crossed the pay station from third base scoring on a wild pitch.

 

Getz went 3-for-4 and Callanan 2-for-5 combining for five of the Leprechauns nine total hits on the game.

 

Christopher Schmees (Saginaw Valley State) got the start for the Leprechauns going five innings on his way to earning his first victory of the season. David Thurman (Wayne State) pitched a scoreless ninth innings recording his second save of the year.

 

SANDUSKY BAY ICE HAULERS  14  SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  6

SPORTS FORCE PARK - The Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers returned to the friendly confines of Sports Force Park defeating the Southern Ohio Copperheads by a score of 14-6.

 

J.T. Popick (University of Akron) had a great night for the Ice Haulers both at the plate and on the base paths. Popick went 3-for-5 scoring two runs and stealing three bases.

 

Sam Seidel (Bowling Green State) also provided three hits out of the leadoff spot in the Sandusky Bay batting order.

 

The Ice Haulers moved into second place in the North Division standings improving the 6-2 on the season. 

 

The Copperheads fell to 3-5 despite multi-hit games from three different batters.

The league currently consists of 14 active franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
