HAMILTON JOES vs. MICHIGAN MONARCHS - DH
FOUNDATION FIELD - The Hamilton Joes and Michigan Monarchs split a double header on Saturday night at Foundation Field.
The Joes won the opener with a walk off single winning 10-9. The Monarchs scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning winning the night cap 10-6.
Hamilton extended its winning streak to a GLSCL-high 10 games thanks to some late inning heroics in the first game.
The Monarchs were on the brink of being beaten for the eight straight game when they rallied in the top of the seven inning.
Michigan loaded the bases but were down to its final out trailing 9-7. Derek Ruiz (Lander University) delivered a two-run single driving in Kimo Fukofuka (San Jose State transfer) and Jacob Gumieny (Southeastern University) tying the game 9-9.
Hamilton reliever Kyle Kesel (Wright State) regrouped stranding the go ahead run in scoring position striking out Kopper Etheridge (Kellogg CC) ending the inning.
Hamilton had already overcome one deficit to take a lead and breaking a previous 7-7 tie. The Joes went right to work in the bottom of the seventh looking for its four walk win its its previous six games.
Kevin Hilton (Lincoln Trail) came to the plate with one out and runners at second and third base. The Monarchs choose to face Hilton as opposed to walk him loading the bases forcing a potential force play at every base.
Hilton, in his first at bat of the game after coming in as a pitch runner, made them regret that strategy. He battled fouling off four pitches bounced the game winner over the first basemen’s head. Jude Allen (Wisconsin Parkside) raced in from third base scoring the game winner 10-9.
The victory clinches the Joes playoff spot for the 2024 GLSCL postseason four-team field. The playoff birth is Hamilton’s fourth consecutive playoff appearance.
In the night cap, the shoe was put on the other foot. The Joes lead 6-3 going into the Monarchs final at bat heading into the top of the seventh inning.
The Monarchs rallied scoring seven times sending 12 batters to the plate.
Fukofuka tied the game 6-6 with an RBI-triple scoring Tanner Mally (Western Michigan). Fukofuka scoring the go ahead run on an RBI-single by Ty Garza (Wayne State).
The Monarchs added three more insurance runs swinging to good vibes away from the Joes.
Etheridge came into pitch the seventh inning for Michigan. He struck out all three batters he faced salvaging the spilt for the Monarchs.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Monarchs (9-15) and a 10-game winning streak for the Joes.
Hamilton (21-6) did win the series giving them the series victory in all nine of its three-game sets of the season.
The Monarchs host the Xenia Scouts on Tuesday while Hamilton begins a five-day break preparing for a trip to Muskegon next weekend.
SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS 16 MUSKEGON CLIPPERS 6
MARSH FIELD - The Southern Ohio Copperheads exploded for 14 runs in the last three innings running away with a 16-6 win on the road over the Muskegon Clippers.
Trialing 4-2 going into the seventh inning, the Copperheads put eight runs on the scoreboard taking the lead.
Charlie Longmeier (University of Evansville) tied the game with a two-run double. The next batter, Billy Adams (Ohio University transfer) gave Southern Ohio the lead with his own two-RBI two-base hit.
Later in the inning, the Copperheads again blasted back-to-back two-run doubles provided by Alejandro Covas (Kent State) and Gavyn Smith (University of Findlay).
The Copperheads poured it on scoring six more times in the top of the ninth inning. Case Sullivan’s (Valparaiso) two-run single and another two-run double by Longmeier highlighted the inning.
Four different Copperheads batters enjoyed two-hour games. Longmeier and Adams each drove in four RBIs and Smith chipped in with three RBIs.
Covas was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple scoring two runs.
Austin Cicerone (Saginaw Valley State) went 2-for-3 for the Clippers. Sam Lisiak (Biola University) drove in a pair of RBIs on a two-run double in the sixth inning.
Southern Ohio (12-14) has moved into fourth place of the GLSCL standings. The Copperheads sit two full games ahead of he Xenia Scouts for the final spot in the playoff field.
The Copperheads go for the road series sweep on Sunday against the the second place Clippers (14-9). The first pitch at Marsh Field is scheduled for 4:05pm.
LIMA LOCOS 6 XENIA SCOUTS 1
GRADY'S FIELD - The Lima Locos clinched a series win over the Xenia Scouts with a 6-1 victory at Grady’s Field.
It quite the bounce back for the Locos (15-11) after dropping a home series earlier in the week at home against the Muskegon Clippers.
Blake Bowen (University of Akron) led the way at the plate for the Locos. Bowen went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Landon Tate (Kennesaw State) and Bo Shinkle (Kent State transfer) each proving two knocks as the Lima offense came up with a total of 13 hits on the game.
Chase Jaragin (College of Charleston) took over the GLSCL lead earning his fourth win of the season. Jaragin went went six innings giving up just one run while scattering seven hits.
Skyler Lhamon (Olney Central College) three threw shutout innings earning his second save since joining the team on June 25. Lhamon struck out six out of the nine batters that he retired on the night.
Zach Zarko (LeTourneau University) went 2-for-4 for Xenia (10-16) as the Scouts were only able to muster seven hits.
The wrap-up game of the three-game series happens on Sunday at Simmons Field with first pitch scheduled for 5:05pm.

The league currently consists of 7 active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
