TUNING FOR PLAYOFFS

The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs, with an eye on Tuesday’s Divisional Playoff, rested their pitching staff tonight in an 8-3 loss to the Badlands Big Sticks in their final game of the regular season.

Chauncey Callier, normally an outfielder, started on the mound for the Sabre Dogs tonight, his first start at the position. Despite the inexperience, Callier pitched admirably well, going 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 1.

The Sabre Dogs took the lead right away in the 1st when Clay Ashworth doubled home Mason Dinesen to make it 1-0. They struck again in the 3rd when EJ Ranel hit a solo home run to left, becoming the 1st player in Expedition League history to hit 20 home runs in a season.

Brock Baughcum’s single in the 5th, scoring Stephen Skeggs, brought the score to 3-1, but it was all Big Sticks from there.

The Sabre Dogs finish their inaugural regular season with a record of 40-24, leading the league in almost every statistical batting category and setting an excellent benchmark for years to come. Individually, Ranel was nothing short of phenomenal, leading the league in batting, home runs, and runs batted in.

On Tuesday, the Sabre Dogs and Big Sticks will meet one last time this season in the Lewis Divisional Playoff Game at 7:05 PM at Corbett Field. Get your tickets by visiting tickets.sourisvalleysabredogs.com or calling 701-839-9100.
