Pirates Complete Season Sweep of Millersville, Improve to 6-0
The Pirates continue what has been the hottest start in the club's history.
The team headed to Lancaster on Friday night to face off against the Millersville Marauders. The guys embraced the Friday night lights, the packed barn, and the overall atmosphere of the game. Despite the fast pace of the road matchup, it wasn't until the second period that the game saw its first goal. On arguably the most lethal powerplay in the Colonial States, offensive captain Jimmy Griffin found the back of the net to give the Pirates a one-goal lead. Just when the Marauders thought they could regain their footing, alternate captain Cam Adamec buried a goal of his own just twenty seconds later. The Pirates took the two-goal lead into the locker room.
When asked what was said during the intermission, head coach Joe Carbone said, "We preached a fast start and a complete game. We know how quickly leads can change in this league, and we were aware that [Millersville] would come out flying to start the period. If we could exceed their energy and play smart in our defensive zone, we would be successful."
Sure enough, the Marauders gave the Pirates a run for their money. Just twenty seconds into the period, Cole McCulley ripped a backhander past Seton Hall net-minder Joey Salvador to make it 2-1. However, after some back-and-forth play, it was Adamec again who found the back of the net and extended the lead back to two goals. After Millersville responded with a goal of their own, and after a strategically-called timeout by the Pirates, junior standout Tyler Fearon scored on a breakaway and salted the game away. At the final buzzer, the Pirates reigned victorious over the Marauders by a score of 4-2, completing the regular season sweep. Between the pipes, freshman sensation Joey Salvador made 35 saves to earn his third win of the season.
Less than 24 hours later, the Pirates made their way back to West Orange for a home date with the Bryn Athyn Lions. It was a close, defensive bout through the first twenty minutes. However, over time, Bryn Athyn's lack of depth caught up to them, and the Pirates were able to wear them out. At the end of sixty minutes, the Pirates were victorious once again, this time by a score of 7-1. Griffin and Fearon each had two goals, and Michael Volpi, Cam Toussaint, and Luke Spagnuolo each added a tally of their own to contribute to the win. Freshman goaltender John Fox stood tall and turned aside 20 shots to earn his second win of the season.
With yet another 2-0 weekend, the Pirates improve to a perfect 6-0 on the season. What's more, the Pirates have now moved into the ACHA M2 Top 20, currently sitting at #18 in the nation. The team will look to build more momentum next Sunday when they take on the Scranton Royals at Revolution Ice Centre in Jenkins Township, PA.
