Game Preview: Flyers vs. Connecticut Jr. Rangers
Your eyes aren’t deceiving you. The headline reads correctly. The Flyers are returning home for their first home game of 2017, a rare weekday afternoon tilt with the Connecticut Junior Rangers this Thursday, January 12th, at 1:50pm. This will be the Flyers only game this week, before taking on the Okanagan Eagles for two games on home ice next weekend, January 21st and 22nd.
The Flyers fared well this past weekend at the USPHL Winter Showcase in Massachusetts, earning three points and going 1-1-1 on the weekend. The team dropped their Friday night game with Syracuse by a final of 4-0. On Saturday, the Flyers were able to overcome Okanagan by a 3-1 final, with help from Vadim Vasjonkin, Jeff Eppright and Richie Greenberg on the three goals. On Sunday, the Flyers saw themselves in a fierce battle with the Junior Bruins. Goals by Nick Polsinelli and Rich Brusco in the second period got the Flyers out to a lead, but they would see it slip away on two Bruins goals in the third period. The Bruins would come away victorious in overtime, but the Flyers would earn an important point in the standings in the game.
Heading into this Thursday’s game, the Flyers find themselves just six points behind Springfield for eighth place in the Premier Division standings. With a number of opportunities coming up to earn points, the Flyers are now looking to take it one game at a time to move up into a potential playoff spot here at the final stretch of the season.
This week’s game will be just the third time the Flyers are facing the Jr. Rangers this season. The Flyers hosted the Rangers back in November for a two game weekend. On November 5th, a hard fought game in which the Flyers had a lead, saw the final score go in favor of the Rangers 3-2. But on Sunday, the Flyers were able to emerge victorious on a come from behind win, with goals from Brendan Ferguson and Mateo Capriotti in the third period. The Flyers are looking to take the lead in the season series before both teams meet again up in Connecticut in late February.
Tickets for Thursday's game and all remaining Flyers Junior Hockey team games are available at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees or online at USPHLFlyers.com.
Players to Watch:
For the Flyers, Reid Bibb has managed to jump up into the team lead in points. The spot previously jockeyed for by JR Barone and Polsinelli now has a new name at the helm, after Bibb earned three points this past weekend. While he brought 16 points with him from South Shore, he’s been able to earn 11 thus far in his time with the Flyers. Watch for Bibb to continue his offensive output on home ice on Thursday.
For Connecticut, Max Rasberg continues his dominance up front. His 35 points on the year is good for eighth among the scoring leaders in the Premier Division this season. Trailing just behind him is Blake Carrick with 31 points. Both players were standouts in the weekend series in Voorhees back in November, and we have no doubt will also standout this week as well.
