Sunfish Sweep Whiskey Jacks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Wheat City Whiskey Jacks have been swept by the Sioux Falls Sunfish, dropping both games of the doubleheader Tuesday. The Jacks have lost three straight ballgames. 

 

Game 1

The Whiskey Jacks struggled offensively and, in the field, only collecting two hits and committing four errors in a 7-2 loss. Right fielder Houston Fogelstrom was responsible for both hits; The right fielder hit a towering two-run homer to left in the 5th inning. Fogelstrom finished the game 2-for-2, improving his average to .289 on the season. The rest of the Whiskey Jacks lineup was hitless, including designated hitter Jake Hjelle, who snapped his 6-game hitting streak. The

 

Sunfish second baseman Jonathan Brandon went 2-for-4 Tuesday and recorded his 11th stolen base of the season, in which he is currently tied for 3rd with teammate Declan Beers. Sunfish right fielder Kenneth Dutka went 1-for-4, including a two-run double in the 7th inning, his 4th of the season. Left fielder Tanner Wilson went 1-for-3 with a RBI in the 2nd inning. Third baseman Dane Fraser and shortstop Norris McClure extended their hitting streaks to five games, both going 1-for-3 and in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader. McClure also recorded a RBI. 

 

Pitcher Mitch Stone (2-2, 4.61 ERA) recorded the win for the Sunfish, going six innings on two runs (both earned), giving up only two hits, and four strikeouts. Andrew Garcia (4-1, 2.57 ERA) pitched one shutout inning in relief. Whiskey Jacks pitcher Sam Marhefke (2-3, 5.75 ERA) was assigned the loss, going six innings on four runs (three earned) while walking three batters, and striking out five. Pitcher Brandon Nicks (0-0, 10.13 ERA) gave up three runs (all earned) in three innings of relief. 

 

Game 2

The Sunfish silenced the Whiskey Jacks, winning 6-2 and sweeping the three-game series at Kraft Field. Pitcher Drew Belew (2-0, 2.01 ERA) pitched five shutout innings with five strikeouts, walking one batter. Austin Oblas (2-1, 4.80 ERA) pitched two innings in relief on two runs allowed (both earned), giving up four hits, and striking out two batters. Whiskey Jacks pitcher Jake Anderson (1-5, 6.83 ERA) recorded the loss, his fifth straight in nine total appearances on the year. Anderson pitched three innings on three runs (all earned), giving up four hits, and stirking out five batters. Anderson walked six batters tonight, his second consecutive start of six walks, and is second on the team with 34 walks earned. Pitcher Matthew Dalquist (2-1, 7.24 ERA) pitched four innings on three runs (two earned), giving up five hits, and striking out four batters.

 

Sunfish designated hitter Cade Kalehuawehe led off the game with his first homerun of the season and recorded his 9th RBI of the season. Kalehuawehe finished the game 1-for-3. Catcher Will Olson finished 1-for-2 with a RBI, extending his hitting streak to six games after going 1-for-4 in the first game of the doubleheader. Olson doubled for the second consecutive game. Outfielder Tanner Wilson extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-4 performance with a triple and two RBI. First baseman Zeph Hoffpauir, shortstop Benito Garcia, and left fielder Adonis Forte all collected one hit a piece. Forte got injured in the 7th inning after a hard collision with the outfield wall on a homerun from Whiskey Jacks catcher Rhett Stein. 

 

Whiskey Jacks catcher Rhett Stein hit his first homerun of the season Tuesday, adding on a run that would narrow, but not cover, the lead for the Sunfish. Stein finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI, his 14th of the season. Third baseman Jaxon Sorenson went 2-for-3, lifting his average to .310 on the season. Shortstop Ethan Sitzman and first baseman Jake Hjelle both recorded a hit tonight for the Jacks.

 

The Whiskey Jacks (16-19) have Wednesday and Thursday off before welcoming Souris Valley (24-12) to Grand Forks for a one-game homestand Friday. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. at Kraft Field.
