ROUND ROBIN SEEDING GAMES:
GAME 1: YCBC Caps 60 vs Riverview Royals
The Caps opened the NMBA tournament on Saturday morning against a team it has played often in the past few years and the teams typically match up well. In this game, the Caps took an early lead on the Riverview Royals in the first half and never looked back cruising to a 60-45 win. The Caps played well on defense and used their full court press to take control of the match. Leading the Caps in scoring were Lance Mombourquette with 17 points and Gabe LaCroix with 13. Mombourquette also lead the team in rebounds with 10 (a double double!) while Dominic Doiron chipped in with 6. Jacob Moore and Caleb Scholten were tough on defense with 3 steals apiece.
Leading the Royals were Blake Grossman with 10 points and Ethan Hansen with 9.
GAME 2: YCBC Caps 70 vs NMBA Lions
In their second game of the tournament, the Caps faced their crosstown rivals the NMBA Lions. A determined Caps team came out fast on both ends of the court leading to a 43-18 half time score which they extended to a 70-30 lopsided win. Leading the Caps in scoring were Gabe LaCroix with 15 points and Jacob Moore and Lance Mombourquette with 11 each. Mombourquette led the team in rebounds with 6 while LaCroix chipped in 5.
Leading the Lions in scoring were Connor Metzler with 11 and David Morales with 6.
GAME 3: YCBC Caps 42 vs Western Valley Attack 32
In their final round robin game the Caps took on a very aggressive and hungry Western Valley team. The game was physical and very close as the teams went into half with the Caps having a slim 1 point lead (18-17). The Caps struggled shooting but their defense and full court pressure ended up being too much for the Attack with the Caps extending their lead to 10 points and a 42-32 win. Leading the Caps in scoring were Lance Mombourquette with 12 and Caleb Scholten with 9. On the boards, the Caps were led by Eric D’Amours and Mombourquette with 5 each while Scholten led the team in steals with 5.
Leading scorers for the Attack were Cole Crouse and Keegan Page with 8 points each.
GOLD MEDAL GAME
By virtue of their 3-0 record in the round robin portion of the tournament, the Caps advanced to the finals to play a familiar foe – the Western Valley Attack who finished round robin play with a 2-1 record.
YCBC Caps 52 vs Western Valley 47
The Western Valley Attack were keen on revenging their earlier loss to the Caps in round robin play and lived up to their “Attack” name early in the game with strong defense and aggressive overall play. The Attack lead through the first 3 quarters but the Caps kept things close despite a poor shooting performance through great defense, a fantastic full court press and some great rebounding. A 17-11 final quarter changed a 1 point deficit for the Caps into a 5 point win for the tournament gold.
Leading the Caps offense was Caleb Lance Mombourquette with 20 points, Gabe Lacroix with 11 and Dominic Doiron and Caleb Scholten with 6 apiece. On the boards Eric D’Amours was a beast pulling down 11 while Mombourquette contributed 7. Mombourquette also led all Caps with his thieving ways having a whopping 7 steals.
Leading the Western Valley Attack in scoring were Cole Crouse with 17 points and Aidan Palmer with 11.
FINAL RESULTS:
GOLD: YCBC Caps
SILVER: Western Valley Attack
BRONZE: Riverview Royals
Way to go boys!
