Metros Rebound After Tough Loss (updated 6/19/24)

After a tough Sunday afternoon at Overpeck Park, the Bergen Metros got back to work to get on track. Tuesday night's matchup vs the New Brunswick Matrix proved to show a better performance for the Metros. However, that wasn't the case early on.
The scoring started when Matrix’s right fielder Aidan Watson hit a SAC fly to bring home third baseman Casey Cumiskey to make the score 1-0 in the 1st.
While three early strikeouts in the 1st and 2nd rattled the Metros, they were still able to get on base with a couple walks. With two outs in the 2nd, shortstop Daniel Chun brought home third baseman with a base hit to drive in Luis Ramirez to tie up the game.
But the Matrix had it going for them in the next few innings. Watson’s RBI-double in the 3rd added another run, and in the 5th, two more runs came pouring in for the Matrix making the score 4-2.
Matrix pitcher Matthew King on his first start of the season was on the mound pitching a strong seven inning performance striking out eight. At one point, he had retired 10 straight Metros in a row.
The tide turned in the home seventh. With two outs, first baseman Tyler Worth drove home newcomer Daniel Chun to get the Metros closer. Luis Ramirez then drove in Steven Peralta with a base hit to tie the game at four.
The home eighth the big inning for the Metros. In the top of the eight, reliever Kyle McCaffery pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Jesse Bash lead off the bottom frame, with the Metros Play of the Game. Bash, who had just one hit to this early point in the season, became the hero Tuesday night. He hit a moon shot over the left field fence for his first home run giving the Metros the lead for the first time. The Metros scored another run in the frame on a misplayed ball.
The leadoff batter for the Matrix got on base on an error to start the 9th. A focused McCaffery got the next batter to ground out, and then struck out the last two batters for the win. With the Metros win they move to 3-1 on the season and will once the Matrix again on Thursday night at East Brunswick Tech.
