FAQs

Why only Half Ice?

By shrinking the ice surface, we are able to increase the amount of time a player is touching the puck, as opposed to chasing the puck. We don’t want those little legs to get tired and burnt out! Full-sized men’s college teams use full ice, so it really does not make sense to make players 8 and under do the same!. The University has supplied us with full-sized professional boards which allow us to split the ice in half.

How many players are on a team?

The number of Mites per team is kept to under 15 skaters, which not only maximizes the player/coach ratio, but also ensures that each player gets plenty of camera time on the weekend! Games are played 4 v 4 with a goalie.

How many games and practices will the Mites have?

  • You will practice 2 times per week from late September-March. Practices are weeknights at various times.

  • Mite Pre-Season Jamboree

  • Mite Mayhem Holiday Play Day at UD

  • You will have 1-2 games per weekend.

  • We will participate in Mite tournaments throughout the season.

Why are JBH's fees less expensive than other clubs in the area?

The Jr. Blue Hens Ice Hockey Club is a nonprofit; therefore, we are not in the business of making money. This allows us to focus on giving our members a great hockey experience! Additionally, the University of Delaware is extremely dedicated to growing the sport of hockey and in turn, they are very generous to our program. We have been able to turn that generosity around and give it back to the club members.

What’s included in the season fee?

Practice ice, game ice, as well as access to any Jr. Blue Hens clinics and Stick and Pucks throughout the season.

What’s not included in the season fee?

Extra Tournaments (which may cost $40-$60 depending on how many kids play), uniforms, and your player's USA Hockey registration (which costs around $40 for one year). In addition, head to toe protective equipment is not included and is required.

Why does my player need to be registered with USA Hockey?

USA Hockey provides insurance for any on or off ice activity associated with the club. Should you need it, it's there for you.  We require all coaches and players to be registered with USA Hockey before they can take the ice. It protects us all.
