Rams History
1955 - URI Men’s Ice Hockey club founded.
1975 - Men’s hockey club s born again under Prof. Connie Hill. Rams finish 9-4-1
1976 - Team ties Rhode Island Junior College in first collegiate game played at Providence Civic Center.
1988 - Team wins third straight league title. Ranked 5th in the country, URI is invited to their first National Collegiate Club Tournament.
1989 - Joe Augustine becomes coach and team cracks the top 10 nationally. URI Rams have posted a winning record ever since.
2000 - Team posts the most wins ever in a season (20-8-2), ranks 13th nationally and captures first ever ECHA Championship Title. Coach Augustine registers his 200 win at URI.
2004 - Team finishes with most wins ever in a single season for a URI team (36-3-1). URI wins 2nd ECHA Championship title and finishes 4th at the ACHA National Collegiate Club Tournament.
2005 - Once again, team finishes with most ever wins in a single season for a URI team (37-4-1). Continues ECHA undefeated record with second consecutive League and Playoff (3rd overall) Championship, again finishing 4th at the ACHA National Collegiate Club Tournament.
2006 - URI finishes the regular season 31-1-3, undefeated in ECHA league play and captures third consecutive ECHA regular season league championship. The team ends the regular season ranked #1 in the country for the first time in team history. URI captures the universities first ACHA Division I National Championship with wins over West Chester 4-1, University of Michigan-Dearborn 2-1 (2OT), Lindenwood University 3-1 and Penn State University 3-1. The team finishes the season with a 36-2-3 record.
2007 - URI finishes the regular season 27-8-1 while capturing its 4th consecutive ECHA regular season league championship and 3rd ECHA playoff championship in 4 years. The team finishes the season 30-9-1 and ranked 5th in the country after losing in the quarterfinals of the ACHA National Tournament. URI reaches 30 wins for the 4th consecutive year. Graduating seniors Mike Curran and Matt Loftus end their careers at URI number 1 and 2 in all time scoring.
2008 - With 16 new players, URI finishes regular season 22-13-1 and third in the newly formed ESCHL. The team wins its first round game in the ACHA National tournament against West Chester 6-4 after trailing 4-2 after two periods. URI would lose its next game in the quarter finals to the eventual National Champion, University of Illinois 6-2. The team ends the season 23-15-1.
2009 - URI finishes the regular season 23-8-2 and co-regular season champions of the ESCHL. Coach Augustine wins his 400th career game at URI against Wesleyan. Four URI players represent Team USA at the World University Games in Harbin China which is coached by Joe Augustine. The Rams lose in the first round of the ACHA National Tournament in OT to Ohio University 4-3. URI reaches 20 wins for the 6th straight year, ends the season 23-10-2 and ranked 9th in the country.
2010 - URI finishes the regular season 21-10-4 and second in the ESCHL. The Rams make it to the finals of the ESCHL tournament for the first time and lose to Penn State 7-5. URI reaches 20 wins for the 7th straight season but does not make the ACHA National Tournament for the first time since 2004. Rhody ends the season ranked #18 in the country.
2011 - URI finishes the regular season 31-5-1. The team finishes first in the ESCHL regular season and wins the ESCHL playoff championship for the first time. URI reaches 20 wins for the 8th straight season and the 30 win plateau for the fourth time in team history. The Rams make a return trip to the ACHA National Tournament. They beat Penn State in the first round but lose to Davenport University in the quarterfinals. URI ends the season ranked #8 in the country.
2012 - The Rams finish the regular season 21-20-2 extending the number of winning seasons to 23 straight years under Coach Augustine. The team wins its second consecutive ESCHL playoff championship with a 4-3 OT victory against Stony Brook. URI reaches 20 wins for the 9th straight season but does not make the ACHA National Tournament as the 15th ranked team in the country. URI ends the season ranked 23rd in the country.
2013 - The URI hockey team achieved many different milestones during the 2012-2013 season. The team finished the season 19-12-10 and extended the number of winning season under Coach Augustine to 24 straight seasons. Coach Augustine registered his 500th career victory at URI on Jan 4th, 2013 against West Chester University making him only the third coach in URI history to reach this milestone. URI finished 2nd in the ESCHL regular season and earned a return trip back to the ACHA National Champion for the second time in four years. The Rams lost to SUNY Stony Brook in the semifinals of the ESCHL playoffs and in the first round of the ACHA National Tournament, earning the Rams final ranking of 18th in the country.
2014 - The Rams started quickly out of the gate at the start of the 2013-2014 season by winning their first nine games. The team finished the season 23-13-2, marking the 9th year out of 10 seasons of reaching the 20 win plateau. Rhody finished 3rd in the ESCHL regular season and earned a return trip to the ACHA National tournament for the third time in five years as the #16 seed. URI won their first game in the national tournament for the first time since 2011 against #17 Lindenwood 4-3. #16 URI lost to #1 and eventual national champion Arizona State 5-0.
2015 - The URI hockey team continued their trend with winning early in the 2014-2015 season jumping out to 10-1-1 record after 12 games. The team finished the season 30-9-2. This would be only the 6th time in Rams history that the team reached 30 wins. Rhody finished 2nd in the ESCHL regular season but lost in the ESCHL playoff semifinals to Delaware 2-1. URI earned a #12 seed in the ACHA National tournament only to lose to arch rival #5 Stony Brook by the score of 2-0. The Rams finished the season ranked #12 in the country. AJ Chua became the 27th person in URI history to reach 100 career points and Andrew Sherman was selected first team All American in the ACHA. He became the first person since 2006 and only the 2nd URI goalie in history to achieve this mark.
2016 - The Rams started the season slowly in 2015 going 5-5 after the first 10 games and 9-11-3 by the end of the 1st semester. The team continued to struggle after the break and finished the season 16-19-3 marking the first time in 28 seasons under Head Coach Joe Augustine regime of not reaching the .500 mark. The team made it to the ESCHL semifinals after beating Rutgers 3-2 in the quarterfinals before losing to Stony Brook 6-4. Junior Ray Boudiette registered 61 points which was the 6th highest point total in one season in Rams history. Senior Captain Robbie Buehrer finished his career with 147 points in 147 games putting the RI native in 9th place all time in career points in Rams history.
2017 - After a sub .500 season in 2016, URI reaches the 20 win mark in 2017 with a 21-12-7 overall record. The Rams post a 16-4-4 record in the first semester however took an 8 game losing streak into the ESCHL playoffs. Rhody would end their season in the second round of the playoffs after losing to eventual playoff champion Liberty 3-1. URI finishes the season ranked #25 in the country. Coach Joe Augustine reaches 596 career wins in 2016. Two time Brad Boss MVP Ray Boudiette finishes his career with 153 points which places him at #9 all time.
2018 - URI reached the 20 win mark for the 8th time in the last 10 years by posting an overall record of 23-13-2. The Rams were lead by senior Captain Mike Pesola who registered 38 points in 34 games. Mike was the 30th player in URI Hockey history to reach the 100 career point club. With 124 career points, the Coventry native ranks 17th on the all time scoring list. URI lost 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the ESCHL tournament to New York University. Rhody finished the season ranked #21 in the country which was their highest ranking since 2015.
2019 - The Rams started slowly out of the gate in 2018 winning 5 out of their 10 games and 11 out of 20 ending the first semester 11-9. Coming back from break, Rhody won 10 games in the second semester and posted a overall 21-13-4 record heading into the ESCHL playoffs as the #3 seed. URI would end their season against Delaware in the playoffs and finishing the season ranked #22 and missing the ACHA National tournament for the 4th consecutive year. Joe Augustine coached in his 1000th career game at URI on Jan 20th against University of Buffalo. MVP and Junior Jake Salisbury lead the team with 48pts.
