For nearly 40 years, Webster man has given warm Wings welcomes

Window 2 at Frontier Field is Dave Welker’s domain.

That’s where Welker sells tickets to Rochester Red Wings games, as he has since the team began playing there in 1997. The Webster resident and native started with the team in 1976 at the old Silver Stadium on Norton Street.

“It’s a great job,” said Welker, 64, who now is manager of the ticket office and of accounts paid and received. “It helps keep you young. I’ve always told my kids I don’t want to be an ‘old person,’ someone who acts old. It’s a wonderful opportunity to work with people who share a passion for baseball, like I have, and doing something I’ve always wanted to do.”

There’s no worry of Welker acting “old.” He greets customers with a cheerful attitude and a ready smile, and keeps a schedule of volunteer work that would intimidate someone half his age.
