Waves Outlast Gulls in Pell Bridge Thriller

NEWPORT, RI – In the second matchup between these two teams in as many weeks, the Ocean State Waves hold on to defeat the Newport Gulls 12-10 in a matchup that combined for 22 runs.

The Gulls struck first once again in the first, picking up their first run when Colton Ledbetter bombed his third home run of the season high over the centerfield wall. The Waves responded two innings later with a run of their own thanks to Creek Robertson, who’s second hit of the summer was good for two bases and bought enough time for Alex Ramirez to sprint home to tie things at 1-1.

An RBI shot from Noah Martinez to send Trent Farquhar in for the score in the fourth put the home team up by one before the game blew open offensively. In the busiest inning of the evening, Max Johnson got the Waves back on the board with a run before Chase Meggers sent a deep drive into right field that left the park, adding another three runs thanks to the Megger’s first homer of the summer. In the bottom of the frame, Newport scored another two in response to make it a 6-4 ballgame.

Ocean State showed no signs of slowing down in the sixth. Three of the four runs in the frame came by way of a three-RBI double from Donovan Cash, who came in himself the score after a stolen base and an error by a Gulls infielder. A pair of bases-loaded walks gave Newport another pair of score in the bottom half, but the Waves held a comfortable advantage at 10-6.

The Gulls would put up a fight later, however. In the eighth inning, the Waves scored two more on a 2RBI triple from Brodey Heaton, but would be outscored in the inning thanks to a three-run effort from Newport. With the bases loaded, Farquhar drives in another score before Josh Kuroda-Grauer found home on a passed ball. The scoring effort concluded after another RBI shot, this time from Luke Beckstein to make the score 12-9.

Ocean State sent in Ayden Head to close out the game in the ninth and he delivered. With two runs and the lead cut down to just two after another score drove in by Farquhar, the Waves secured the final out on a flyball to right field. Ocean State takes game two of the Pell Bridge series, moving to 5-6 on the season and snapping Newport’s six-game winning streak.
