24-year-old Massachusetts Cam Schlittler stunned the major league baseball scene in the Wild Card round of the 2025 MLB postseason, against his hometown team - the Boston Red Sox.

With the loss of their Ace, Gerrit Cole, ahead of the 2025 season, the Yankees were in desperate need for a replacement. Making his rookie debut on July 9th, the right-handed pitcher established himself as a true threat as a starter in the league despite his age, and earned himself a consistent position within the Yankees bullpen rotation as a starter.

During his collegiate career at Northeastern University, Schlittler was signed to be a Wave in the summer of 2020 - unfortunately, amidst a global pandemic, was never able to suit up at Old Mountain Field. But, still identifies as a Wave, despite the turmoil that overcame that era of collegiate athletics.

In his three-year stint at Northeastern, Schlittler made a major impact for the Huskies on the mound. Over three seasons (one being his rookie season that was shortened by the Covid-19 pandemic), Schlittler accumulated 182 innings in 31 appearances, tallying 180 strikeouts and boasting a career ERA of 2.67 as a starter. These outstanding numbers earned him Rookie All-American, Second-Team All-American, and a variety of other accolades in his short career.

Schlittler was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 7th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. He took the year to train and rehab, and began his professional playing career in the spring of 2023, where he reached High A with the Hudson Valley Renegades.

The 2024 season was where the Walpole, MA native began to shine – in one season, he climbed from High-A with the Renegades, to the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In 2025, Schlittler split his time between the Yankees’ AA and AAA affiliates, before eventually getting the call and making his MLB debut on July 9th.

Throughout the second half of the season, Sclittler established himself as a reliable arm, one that carried the Yankees to their eighth postseason appearance in the last nine years. Tallying 73 innings and 84 strikeouts across fourteen games, Cam Schlittler became a household name heading into the Wild Card series against none other than the Boston Red Sox.

Growing up outside of Boston, the Yankees’ decision to start Schlittler in a do-or-die game two of the Wild Card series generated a variety of storylines, and proved to fuel him ahead of his postseason debut. Against the hometown team, he had a historic night, throwing for eight innings, allowing no runs, and tallying twelve strikeouts - the most by a Yankees Rookie in a postseason game in franchise history. This wasn't all, as he became the first pitcher in MLB history to throw at least eight scoreless innings and record 12 strikeouts without allowing a walk in a postseason game.
