#24 URI Falters in the 3rd period to Lose to #12 University of Delaware
KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND—#24 URI faced #12 University of Delaware in this one but ended up falling short with 6-3 loss. With 12:03 left in the first period of play, Delaware scored first giving them the 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, a Delaware penalty gave the rams a power play goal by the captain, Ray Boudiette, with assists from Eddie Cordero and Billy D’Amore to tie it up 1-1. Later on in the period, with 2:42 left in the first, Delaware scored to retake a 2-1 lead.
Early on in the second, a penalty by the Rams forced them to pay with a power play goal from Delaware’s Michael Nisky to increase their lead to 3-1. Around four minutes later, the Rams’ Luke Vendetto scored a beautiful unassisted goal cutting the deficit to 3-2. With 6:24 left in the second, a goal by Matt Kowash with assists from Ray Boudiette and Mike Pesola tied up the game at 3-3. Two goals back to back gave the Rams great confidence going forward but Delaware struck once again with a goal giving them the 4-3 lead with only 2:14 left in the second period. At the end of the second, the score remained 4-3 in favor of Delaware.
The first ten minutes of the third period was fairly quiet with neither team scoring or penalties taken. With 7:49 left in the game, Delaware scored again to increase their lead to 5-3. With 5:25 left in the game, a 5 minute major penalty by the Rams seemed to kill the last hope for victory in this one. Delaware scored one last time with a power play goal to increase the lead to 6-3, which would be the final score. It was reasonably even with shots on goal by both teams with Delaware having the slight 32 to 31 advantage over the Rams with JT Ketzenberger in net. The Rams fell to 4-3-2.
