Cyr’s Five-Goal Night Powers Rams to Weekend Sweep of TCNJ
The University of Rhode Island Rams capped a perfect opening weekend with a resounding 9–1 victory over The College of New Jersey on Saturday at Tsai Ice Rink. Sophomore forward Cam Cyr turned in a career performance with five goals and an assist, while freshman goaltender James Hunt earned his first collegiate victory with 39 saves as Rhode Island improved to 2–0 on the season.
TCNJ briefly held momentum after scoring just five minutes into the contest, but the Rams stormed back with six unanswered goals in the opening period. Shane Mulhern tied the game at 12:12 off a feed from Dom Iadevaia and Tim Crane, setting the stage for a URI onslaught. Cyr struck less than a minute later, assisted by Corey Szabo and Mulhern, and Owen Hall followed at 15:26 to give Rhode Island the lead. Cyr then added a power-play tally, Mulhern set up Szabo for another, and the Rams carried a commanding 5–1 edge into intermission.
The offense didn’t slow down. Cyr completed his hat trick midway through the second period on a setup from Szabo and Mulhern before Hall notched his second goal of the night. Cyr then closed the game in the third with two more tallies, including a shorthanded strike at 12:14, capping a six-point night and a dominant team performance.
With the victory, Rhode Island swept its two-game series against TCNJ and will now carry momentum into the start of ECHA league play at the Brad Boss Arena next weekend, with games scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
