A Stride in the Right Direction – Eliminating Maltreatment in Hockey
Thunder Bay, ON - Hockey Northwestern Ontario is dedicating this week to highlight the key areas in eliminating maltreatment from the game of hockey.
With this campaign we aspire to create awareness and inform the HNO region in how we can improve the hockey experience by eliminating maltreatment of officials, coaches, participants, and volunteers. Throughout the week we will be highlighting tips, responsibilities, resources, and rule changes that will help serve a more positive hockey experience to everyone involved.
In furthering its commitment to being leaders in safety and inclusivity, Hockey Canada has introduced an update to its rulebook to focus on recognizing and reporting incidents of maltreatment. New to the 2021-2022 season, Hockey Canada has introduced Section 11 – Maltreatment in the Hockey Canada Rulebook starting this season, which includes bringing all forms of maltreatment under one section of the rulebook and providing guidelines for escalating penalties based on the severity of the inappropriate behaviour from players and team officials.
“It’s easy to say that discrimination, harassment, and abuse have no place in our game… but we all play a role in making that a reality. We must all expect more from participants, our teammates, and ourselves.” – Jason Perrier, HNO President.
Hockey Northwestern Ontario strongly believes that enhancing the awareness and enforcement of proper treatment will not only benefit the player and spectator experience, but will continue to make officiating, coaching, and volunteering a rewarding experience.
