Keep Your Eye on the Dream

Many view the New England Collegiate Baseball League as a breeding ground for future professional ballplayers, coaches and staff. When asked to describe the league's mission and focus, Former Commissioner Mario Tiani once referred to the song "Keep Your Eye on the Dream," for this aspiration often provides the foundation and springboard for players, coaches and interns to set and meet their goals and dreams to advance to the next level.

Each summer, the talent-rich NECBL showcases first-rate collegiate prospects from throughout America in conditions that best simulate what many will face in professional baseball – wooden bats, accelerated schedules and traveling, and stiff competition.

Players in the 13-team league flaunt their skills for fans and Major League Baseball scouts. Teams generally play a 44-game regular season schedule in June, July and early August, traveling to a dozen venues located in all six New England states, including historic Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine.

For many the dream has come true!

In 2016, a franchise-high 12 former Sanford Mainers were selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Since 2003, more than 81 former Mainers have been drafted or played professional baseball, including seven that have made appearances in the Major Leagues!

Kevin Slowey — Pitcher

Slowey produced a 43-36 record for two Major League Teams. The righty spent five years with the Minnesota Twins, which drafted him in 2005. Slowey struck out 495 batters in 662 innings on the hill. He helped lead the Sanford Mainers to an NECBL Championship title in 2004.

Andy Sonnanstine — Pitcher

Sonnanstine pitched five years in the bigs, totaling 28 wins for the Tampa Bay Rays before signing as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs. In his MLB career, Sonnanstine averaged 5.7 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. He took the mound for the Mainers in the summers of 2002 and 2003.

Jason Motte — Pitcher

A 2002 Mainer, the converted catcher was a stronghold in the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen, helping the Cards win a World Series in 2011. Since his debut in 2008, Motte has been a part of four teams, with his latest being the Atlanta Braves. Motte is 27-15 in his career so far with 60 saves. He has a career ERA just over 3.00.

Michael Roth — Pitcher

Roth played for the Mainers in 2009 and 2010, while winning two College World Series titles with the University of South Carolina. He made his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on April 13, 2013. Roth pitched for the Angles and the Texas Rangers. In 23 games in the bigs, Roth fanned 29 hitters over 36 innings, while picking up a 2-1 record in that time frame.

Ryan Reid — Pitcher

Reid, a Portland, ME native and 2005 Mainer, was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2006. He made his MLB debut with Pittsburgh on June 3, 2013. Reid compiled a 1.64 ERA before being claimed off waivers by the New York Mets in 2014, pitching in AAA before signing with the Marlins in November. Reid spent the remainder of his time in professional baseball in the Minor Leagues, ending his run with the Marlins AAA team, the Jupiter Hammerheads with six appearances before being released on May 28, 2016.

Adam Duvall — OF, Atlanta Braves

Adam Duvall

In 2009, Duvall was a powerhouse for the Mainers. He was drafted by the Giants in 2010 and made his MLB debut on June 26, 2014, homering in his second at bat. Duvall sent 107 balls over the wall in his first five seasons, validating his strength at the plate. He joined the Cincinnati Reds in 2015, hitting .219 with five home runs. In 2016 he quickly became a staple for the Reds, hitting .241 with 33 home runs, while appearing in the Home Run Derby and on the National League All-Star team.

This 2010 Mainer was already showing signs of professional play before he was drafted in the sixth round in 2012 by the Cleveland Indians, hitting .311 with 51 hits that season. Wendle dominated Division II ball with a .399 batting average his senior year at West Chester, receiving a first team All-American selection. Wendle was called up in 2016, hitting .260 in 28 games for the A's. Since then, Wendle played four years for the Tampa Bay Rays and is currently a member of the Miami Marlins.

James Bourque — Pitcher, Chicago Cubs

James Bourque

Bourque was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2014, a year after pitching for the Mainers. In 2013 he appeared in nine games, starting seven of them. He struck out 43 hitters in 40 innings of work, registering a 2.92 regular season ERA. Bourque made his MLB debut with the Nationals in 2019 and appeared in seven total games between 2019-20. He is currently in the minor league system for the Chicago Cubs.
