About Dave

David Ahern

David M. Ahern
November 2, 1987 - September 4, 2016

"Life is like a play. It's not the length, but the performance that counts."

David Ahern played for the Sanford Mainers in the summer of 2010 prior to his senior year at Babson College where he capped off his career by being named an All-American and conference MVP.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Dave can tell you that he was loved by everyone. He was a very likable and charismatic guy with an infectious personality. But not only was he very gifted athletically, he was an extremely humble and generous person with a heart of gold.

When it came to sports, Dave was a natural. he possessed all the attributed that make an exceptional athlete. He was effortlessly talented; he was as tough as nails; he was competitive; but most importantly, he was a guy that everyone wanted to have as a teammate.

Dave made it a point to always take time to mentor his younger teammates. He had such a passion for both baseball and hockey, but as good of an athlete he was, he was a better person. Every team should have a player like Dave, but I guess every team can't be so lucky.

-Written by Dave's brother, Joe Ahern

This scholarship is for an elite, two-sport athlete who exemplifies great leadership and whose positive attitude encourages the growth of fellow teammates OR a dedicated student who displays a strong passion for the arts. Qualified arts programming includes theater, digital design/graphic arts, culinary arts and video production. Students must carry a GPA above a 3.0. *

The Mainers began awarding scholarships annually in 2009 after auctioning off game-worn jerseys in 2008, using the funds to supply the scholarship program. During the summer of 2017, the Mainers renamed the scholarship after former player Dave Ahern (2010). Dave unfortunately passed away in the fall of 2016. Dave's character, passion for the game of baseball and involvement in his own community painted the perfect picture of what the Mainers organization is all about.

In his honor, the scholarship was increased in 2018, from $500 to $2,100 to recognize Dave's contribution to the Sanford Mainers while wearing the number 21 during the 2010 season.
