Keene too much; win 8-3 over Vermont
MONTPELIER, VT - The Vermont Mountaineers had their two game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night at Recreation Field, as the Keene Swamp Bats took an 8-3 decision in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
Tyler Bernard went 2-4 for Keene, and collected three RBI's with two singles.
The Swamp Bats scored the game’s first run, after a RBI double from Ben Klafcynski scored Mark Onorati from second in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead.
Keene added to lead in the top of the sixth, with five runs, to end Vermont starter Preston Wasmund’s night. The Swamp Bats capitalized on two errors from the Mountaineers’ defense, and put together five straight hits, allowing five different Swamp Bats to collect RBI’s in the inning.
The Mountaineers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth, as Vermont scratched across three runs that Zach Babitt capped off with a two RBI single off Keene starter Jeff Frost.
It was a little too late though for Vermont, as Keene sent a pair home in the top of the eighth to hold on for the victory.
Wasmund is charged with his second straight loss, while Frost nabs his second win on the season.
Jordan Grangard makes his Vermont Mountaineer debut tomorrow night on the mound.
The Mountaineers hit the road on Thursday night, and start their two game road trip with a stop in Keene, NH to take on the Swamp Bats. Catch all the action live from Alumni Field at 7:00 PM with Vermont radio voice Carmine Vetrano on ESPN 1240 WSKI, and the NECBL broadcast network.
