KEENE, NH – Right-handed pitcher Brad Monroe (Hampton, NH/Southern NH)
struck out six batters (four looking) over six innings of work to guide
the Keene Swamp Bats past the North Adams SteepleCats, 5-2, in New
England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Sunday night in
front of 5,175 fans on Independence Eve and Military Appreciation Night
at Alumni Field.

Keene improves to 11-6 overall on the season. North Adams falls to 6-14.

Monroe (1-1) gave up seven hits in his six innings pitched, one run
(earned) and one walk. Kyle Gehrs (Independence, MO/Iowa Western CC) –
who came into the game for Bryan Benzor (Loganville, GA/Georgia) with
one out in the ninth – notched his second save of the season retiring
the only two batters he faced. Cody Kopilchack (Lima, OH/Wright St.)
suffered the loss on eight hits, five runs (four earned), one walk and
two strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Right fielder Brett DeLoach (Blackshear, GA/Georgia) opened up the
scoring for Keene in the first with an RBI double to left field scoring
Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, IN/Louisville) for a 1-0 advantage.

In the third, the Swamp Bats tacked on three more runs to make it 4-0 as
Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant Univ.) drove home his 10th run of
the season with a single to right field, Colby May (Guyton, GA/Georgia)
plated a runner with an RBI single to left center and Michael Burruss
(Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) knocked in Brown on a fielder’s choice
to cap the frame.

Keene added a run in the fifth with Brown scoring on a fielding error,
North Adams’ second of the night, for a 5-0 gap.

With two outs in the sixth, SteepleCats right fielder Jacob Daniel
(Russellville, AL/Eastern Kentucky Univ.) cut into deficit at 5-1 with a
solo home run to centerfield off of Monroe, his first of the season.

North Adams trimmed Keene’s lead to 5-2 in the eighth inning as first
baseman Sam Russell (Grandville, MI/Central Michigan) roped a single
through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded for his ninth
RBI of the season scoring teammate Mike LeBel (Quincy, MA/URI).

Swamp Bats reliever Scott Silverstein (Brookville, MD/Virginia) limited
any further damage in the frame with a 1-6-3 inning-ending double play
to retire the side. Anthony Cervone (Beacon, NY/St. John’s) was charged
with the earned run after hitting two batters to start the inning before
being pulled for Silverstein.

After an off day tomorrow, Keene returns to action on Tuesday, July 5
against the Vermont Mountaineers at 6:30 pm at Montpelier Recreational
Field.
