Monroe strikes out season-high seven batters as Keene shuts out New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD, MA – Brad Monroe (Hampton, NH/Southern NH) scattered two
hits over six innings pitched and struck out seven batters to guide the
Keene Swamp Bats past the New Bedford Bay Sox, 4-0, in New England
Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Sunday night at Paul Walsh
Field.
Keene improves to a league-best 16-8 overall. New Bedford falls to 8-10.
Monroe, who pushed his record to 2-1 in his fourth start this season,
walked only two batters in the outing while recording a punchout in
every frame but the fifth. Kyle Putkonen (Marietta, GA/Samford) suffered
the loss on six innings of work, two runs (both earned), three hits,
three walks and eight strikeouts.
The Swamp Bats bullpen brass consisting of TJ Ferguson (Westmoreland,
NH/Franklin Pierce), Tyler Skulina (Strongsville, OH/Kent St.) and Eddie
Medina (Staten Island, NY/St. John’s) combined for three scoreless
innings yielding just two hits, one walk and one strikeout to complete
Keene’s fourth shutout of the season along with Monroe.
Keene jumped on the scoreboard in the third inning as Alex Chittenden
(Indianapolis, IN/Louisville) drove home teammate Michael Burruss
(Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) on a groundout to short to make it 1-0.
Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant Univ.) followed with an RBI double
off of the left field wall plating Curt Powell (Knoxville, TN/Georgia)
from second base for an early 2-0 advantage.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Swamp Bats
catcher David Lyon (Emporium, PA/Kent St.) gave Keene a 4-0 lead
depositing a two-run single into left field off of Bay Sox reliever Greg
Terhune (Washington, NJ, Seton Hall).
Lyon, who returned to the Keene Swamp Bats squad prior to the game after
playing for the Team USA Collegiate National Team, went 1-for-4 with two
runs batted in.
Brown led the Swamp Bats offensively going 3-for-4 with one run scored
and one RBI.
Keene returns to action tomorrow in doubleheader action against the
Holyoke Blue Sox, on the road, with game one starting at 5:30 pm. Game
one of the doubleheader between Keene and Holyoke will be a continuation
of a suspended contest between both clubs dating back to June 15.
