Sixth Inning Offense Not Enough In Loss To Newport

The Sanford Mainers hosted the Newport Gulls tonight and had plans to take the 11-2 loss against the Gulls in their last meeting and turn it around to even up the series. The only thing that changed though, was the amount of runs the Gulls scored as the Mainers were defeated 4-2 tonight on their home turf.

Rohn Pierce got the nod for the Mainers. In 5.2 innings pitched, Pierce struck out three, walked three, gave up three hits, and allowed three runs, however only two of the runs were earned. He would get the loss.

The Gulls struck first in the top of the second inning. Brett Winger singled and soon found himself on third after a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Yale Rosen recorded his eighth RBI on the season with a sacrifice fly to score Winger.

They added two more in the top of the sixth. Joel McKeithan lead off the inning with a single and later advanced to third on a double by Alex DeLeon. With one out in the inning the Mainers put Winger on intentionally to load the bases in hopes to set up the double play.

Conor Keniry grounded to second and what started out as a double play resulted in two runs scored after short stop Troy Black overthrew first base.

The Gulls had a 3-0 lead entering the home half of the sixth inning and the Mainers finally found themselves on the board.

Nate LaPointe lead off the bottom half of the inning with a single. The next two hitters would be retired, but Will Cooper kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Cooper and LaPointe both moved up a base on an error by the second baseman.

With two runners in scoring position, Jose Torralba continued his team leading offense by hitting an 2-RBI single putting the Mainers within one.

That's all the Mainers were able to produce as Newport added one more in the eighth to make the score 4-2.

The Mainers fall to 3-7 on the season. They will be off tomorrow, but will remain at home for Friday and Saturday. The Mainers will face the Danbury Westerners for a cross-division match-up on Friday. Tripp Davis is set to make his third start of the season. First pitch will be at 6:30pm

Notes: Anthony Hajjar continues his hitting streak to seven games... He has reached base safely in all ten games... The Mainers have yet to defeat another team besides the New Bedford Bay Sox... Despite the team's record the Mainers rank fourth in the league in hitting... Third in the league in pitching...
