NECBL DAILY RECAP: July 21, 2015
Last Night’s Games:
Plymouth 4, Ocean State 3: Plymouth built itself a four-run lead and withheld a late charge by host Ocean State, as the Pilgrims picked up a 4-3 road win on Tuesday night at Old Mountain Field.
After scoring a run in the fourth, the Pilgrims plated three in the seventh thanks to an error on a sacrifice attempt, a subsequent sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Mandy Alvarez (Eastern Kentucky). The Waves finally put up two runs in the home half of the inning and then got the tying runs on base, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Southpaw Patrick Naughton (Virginia Tech) picked up his third win of the summer after going 6-2/3 innings with only one earned run allowed while striking out four. Luke Olson (George Washington) got his fifth save despite allowing a run over two innings.
Mystic 6, New Bedford 0: Mystic had a six-run lead halfway through the game and its bullpen made that stand the rest of the way in a 6-0 Schooner win at Fitch High School.
Righty Sean Keenan (Marist) picked up his first win of the summer after 2-1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen; he fanned five while walking just one. Meanwhile on offense, Richard Slenker (Yale) and Aaron Hill (Connecticut) each finished with two hits to pace the Schooners at the plate.
Vermont 3, Keene 0: A stellar pitching performance and a pair of homers led Vermont to an important 3-0 road win at Keene on Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
Righty Sean Leland (Louisville) was dominant over 8-1/3 scoreless innings during which he struck out six while walking two. Sam Delaplane (Eastern Michigan) recorded his eighth save this summer in the ninth, while outfielder Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) and catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Maine) homered for the Mountaineers, who remained in first place by a game over Laconia in the North.
Laconia 3, Sanford 2: After visiting Sanford came back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, Laconia went ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh and held on for a 3-2 home win against Sanford in a Northern Division showdown Tuesday at Robbie Mills Field.
After a leadoff single, a walk and a sacrifice put runners in scoring position, James Davison (Howard) singled to score the winning run, and starter Tim Viehoff (Southern N.H.) and closer Austin Eastern (UNC Wilmington) took care of business from there on out.
Viehoff struck out nine batters to move to 5-1 on the summer and raise his strikeout total to 50, while Easter secured his third save of 2015.
North Adams 5, Valley 2: North Adams moved to within a game of a postseason spot after picking up a 5-2 victory against fourth-place Valley on Tuesday night at Joe Wolfe Field.
A four-run second inning proved to be the difference for the SteepleCats, who slugged 11 hits overall. A two-RBI double from Conrad Ziemendorf (SUNY Cortland) highlighted the inning, while Jim Haley (Penn State) plated the first run on a ground-rule double.
North Adams added another run in the fifth to make it 5-1, and Valley would only get one late run the rest of the way as Jared Habershaw (Eckerd) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save.
