Sanford – The Sanford Mainers are excited to announce a trio of great young players out of the University of Michigan as the latest additions to the 2018 Mainers roster.  A strong pair of pitchers in sophomore right hander Jack Weisenburger and freshman lefty Angelo Smith are sure to bolster the Mainers staff while redshirt freshman catcher Harrison Salter will provide valuable time behind the plate.
Weisenburger, a Rockford, MI, native is the third generation of his family to play for Michigan baseball as his grandfather and father did before him.  Now into his second season with the Wolverines he has already eclipsed his production from his freshman year.
In eight appearances this season he has pitched 16.1 innings giving up only 12 hits while striking out 17.  The 6-3 righty who is holding opponents to a mere .207 batting average also picked up his first collegiate save against Bowling Green University.
As a freshman at Michigan he threw 5.2 innings with six strikeouts, only two earned runs and gave up just four hits.
The two-time All-State high school pitcher at Rockford High School was a member of the Michigan All-State Dream Team his senior year.
Smith, a lefty out of Thornton, IL, comes into the 2018 season as one of the more highly touted recruits of this year’s freshman class at Michigan.
At the very least, Smith has lived up to the hype that surrounded him coming into his first collegiate season.  In his seven appearances out of the pen early on for the Wolverines, Smith has thrown 10 innings and has given up only one run for an ERA of 0.90, only allowing eight hits while striking out nine.
At Richards High School, Smith was a four-time All-Conference member and also a three-time Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention, with a Perfect Game All-Region First Team honor in his senior year.
“Looking forward to contributing to the team in any way possible and playing winning baseball,” said Smith about his expectations for this summer in Sanford.
Salter, who is in his second year at Michigan, came into this season chomping at the bit to make an impact behind the plate and in the lineup after redshirting in 2017.
So far in 2018, Salter has played in 13 games with seven starts and has an impressive slash line hitting .314/.400/.314.  The young, 6-3 back stop has racked up 11 hits with seven RBIs, including a double and a triple.
Salter has been just as solid behind the plate as well as he has 60 putouts on 64 chances to go along with three assists and a .984 fielding percentage.
The young man from Bloomfield Hills, MI, played Prep School baseball for St. Mary’s in Orchard Lake, MI.  In his time there, Salter was a two-time All-District player who helped his team to win the 2016 Michigan State Title.
“I have heard of so many great experiences from my teammates and coaches (at Michigan) about the team and community in Maine,” said Salter brimming with excitement for this summer.  “Can’t wait to make lasting memories as a Sanford Mainer.”
As spring finally makes its arrival to the Northeast, Mainers baseball will be underway in just a short time.
