Waves vs. Mainers
Sanford, ME- The Ocean State Waves traveled to downtown Sanford, Maine for a doubleheader against the Sanford Mainers. The first game was a story of offense. The Mainers were the away team for the first game of the split doubleheader and they started off by scoring two runs off Trevor Pittman (Indiana, PA- Kent St.) when Drew DeMartino (Pittsfield, MA- Hartford) tripled into the right-center gap scoring two runs. The Waves came up in the bottom half of the inning where they were able to put a run across the board but that wouldn’t be enough for the Waves. The Mainers then put up six runs in the next innings and finishing the game 12-3.
In game two, however, history was made for both teams as it was the first time either team had played under the new extra inning rules. The Waves scratched a run across on a hit and run play in the second inning on a ball hit by Xavier Vargas (Woodhaven, NY- URI) and scoring Garrett Hodges (Blairsville, GA- Kennesaw St.). Nick Robinson surrendered just one run over five innings. The score was knotted at one when with the new extra inning rules Will McGillis was on second base and he stole third and then scoring on a sac fly by Nick Elsen. That was all Billy Creger needed and he didn’t allow the Mainers runner to advance past second base. The Waves are home against New Bedford at Old Mountain Field.
