Danbury vs. Mystic 7-2
Danbury – Danbury could not mount any consistent offense and Mystic took advantage of Westerner walks and errors to come away with the 5-2 victory over Danbury Tuesday night.
Mystic got on the board first with their plate discipline in the top of the first. Against starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, two walks, a balk, a pair of wild pitches, and a sacrifice fly spotted the Schooners a two-run lead without manufacturing a hit.
The game would progress quickly as no team could put any offense together until the bottom of the fourth. Trailing by a pair of runs, Caleb Upshaw would single and Noah Dickerson would draw a walk to put two on with one out for Nick Lorusso. The Danbury third baseman flied out to left fielder Vinny Martin, who would make the catch but airmail the throw back, giving the Westerners their first run and cutting the deficit in half.
In the following half inning, Mystic answered by pushing across another run on an RBI single by Matthew Toke to make it a two-run game once again. Danbury would respond once again in the bottom of the sixth. Caleb Upshaw would begin the rally once again by lacing a double in the left center field gap. After Dickerson and Lorusso were retired following the double, Vinny Bailey would drive Upshaw in with an RBI single to left field, making it 3-2 as the game reached the late innings.
In the top of the seventh, Mystic would get the insurance runs they were looking for to put pressure on Danbury. Against reliever Jason Goetz, a walk, double, and error gave the Schooners two more runs to put the Westerners in a hole they could not get out of.
The win was credited to Brandon White while the loss was charged to Emmet Sheehan. Danbury looks to snap their two-game losing streak when they head to Keene, New Hampshire to take on the Keene Swampbats Wednesday evening.
