Gulls Clinch Coastal Division with 7-5 Comeback Victory
A three-run fourth inning highlighted by Jacob Burley’s RBI single led the Newport Gulls to a (29-10-1) 7-5 victory over the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (16-22-1) in game two of Tuesday’s doubleheader, helping Newport clinch the Coastal Division.
Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 13 - Newport Gulls 4 (DH, 7 Innings)
OAK BLUFFS, Mass. - The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (16-21-1) defeated the Newport Gulls (28-10-1) 13-4 in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Cardines Field.
The Sharks struck first with a five-run second inning, highlighted by Max Kaufer (Texas A&M) two-run homer and another by Ryan McCoy (Louisville).
Martha’s Vineyard went on to score three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a Scott Seeker (Mount St. Mary’s) solo home run and Ryan McCoy two-run double to give the Sharks a commanding 12-1 lead.
Newport cut into the deficit with a two-run double by Noah Smith (Louisville) in the fifth inning, but the Sharks added another insurance run in the seventh to put the game away for good.
Sharks starter James Sashin (San Diego) earned his second win of the season after allowing three runs and five hits along with four strikeouts across five innings pitched.
Newport Gulls 7 - Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 5 (DH, 7 Innings)
OAK BLUFFS, Mass. - The Newport Gulls (29-10-1) clinched the Coastal Division with a 7-5 victory over the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (16-22-1) in game two of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Cardines Field.
Newport struck first with a four-run first inning, three of which scored on errors and another on a passed ball.
The Sharks answered with a five-run third inning, highlighted by a Carsten Sabathia (Georgia Tech) two-run double followed by a Caden Shapiro (Princeton) RBI single which scored Sabathia.
Newport regained the lead with a three-run fourth inning, sparked by a bases loaded walk and an RBI single by Jacob Burley (Brown) which scored Billy Butler (URI). The Gulls finished the game with six total walks.
Grant Umberger (Virginia Tech) earned his first win of the season with eight strikeouts and just one hit allowed through four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, helping Newport secure a 7-5 victory.
The Gulls will host a Wednesday doubleheader against the Mystic Schooners beginning at 3:00 p.m. while the Sharks host the North Shore Navigators at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night.
Mystic Schooners 3 - North Shore Navigators 2 (DH, 7 Innings)
NORWICH, Conn. - The Mystic Schooners (23-15) defeated the North Shore Navigators (18-21) 3-2 in walk-off fashion in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Dodd Stadium.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Landon Moran (Stetson) put Mystic on the board with a sacrifice fly to bring home Danny Melnick (Rutgers New Brunswick).
Mystic starter Matthew Fletcher (Lasell College) kept North Shore off the scoreboard after pitching five scoreless innings along with eight strikeouts, but the Navigators tied the game in the sixth inning with an RBI double by Stan DeMartinis lll (Bentley).
With the game still tied in extra innings, the Navigators took the lead with a Stan DeMartinis lll sacrifice fly which scored Peter Messervy (Harvard) in the eighth inning. DeMartinis lll was one of just three Navigators to record a hit on the night.
Mystic answered with a run scored by Caleb Stelly (Louisiana Lafayette) following an error by the second baseman to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Down to their final out, Timothy Callahan (Lasell) delivered with a walk-off single in just his second game as a Schooner to bring home Stelly and secure a 3-2 victory for Mystic.
Mystic Schooners 2 - North Shore Navigators 0 (DH, 7 Innings)
NORWICH, Conn. - The Mystic Schooners (24-15) completed a doubleheader sweep with a 2-0 victory over the North Shore Navigators (18-22) on Tuesday night.
Stellar pitching led by Brandon Smith’s (Florida Atlantic) 3.2 scoreless innings and five strikeouts kept the Navigators off the scoreboard.
Colton Shaw (Yale) pitched 2.1 scoreless relief innings along with five strikeouts of his own, while Connor Podeszwa (Tufts) picked up his first save of the season with a perfect ninth inning to seal a 2-0 shutout victory.
Mystic’s first run was scored by Drew Kron ( in the third inning following an error by the shortstop, and Maddix Delena ( added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to give the Schooners an insurance run.
Mystic will head to Cardines field for a doubleheader against the Newport Gulls starting at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon while the Navigators host the Ocean State Waves at 6:35 p.m.
Vermont Mountaineers 7 - Keene SwampBats 0
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers (24-12-1) earned their third straight win with a 7-0 shutout victory over the Keene SwampBats (13-26) at Montpelier Recreation Field on Tuesday night.
Vermont got on the board in the third inning with an RBI double by Cameron Santerre (Rhode Island College) and later extended its lead with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Santino Rosso’s (Hofstra) two-run single which scored Santerre and Marshall Toole (Wofford).
Aaron Whitley (Rochester) gave the Mountaineers a commanding 7-0 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
Max Parker (Le Moyne) was credited with his first win of the season after allowing just one walk and two hits along with six strikeouts across five scoreless innings.
Brian Foley (Massachusetts Lowell), Samuel Rosenfield (Rochester) and Christopher AuClair (D’Youville College) combined with four scoreless innings of their own to seal a shutout 7-0 victory for Vermont.
The Mountaineers will hit the road to face the Sanford Mainers at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday night while the SwampBats face the Upper Valley Nighthawks at 6:00 p.m.
