SANFORD - The Sanford Mainers are pleased to announce Mollie Hludik as the winner of the David M. Ahern Memorial Scholarship for the 2021 year.

Hludik, a Sanford native, was named the recipient of the $2,100 scholarship to be applied to her post-secondary education. She will be attending the University of Southern Maine beginning this fall, majoring in Nursing.

Hludik said she chose USM for its reputable nursing program, while also offering affordable education and being close to home. She also hopes to stay involved in community service while enrolled.

“I like to help people and make a difference and that is why I think nursing will be a great fit for me,” Hludik said. “One goal of mine is to be a traveling nurse so I can see and experience other places and cultures while continuing my career.”

Hludik graduated from Sanford High School in May and was a member of the Spartans soccer program for all four years, while also participating as a member of the track and field and basketball teams her first three years. She also served on the board of directors for the school’s Key Club community service organization, including as president from her sophomore to senior years.

“David [Ahern] was a true leader on and off the field,” Chairman of the Mainers Board of Directors, Jacob Ouellette said. “Mollie has shown us that she exemplifies the values of this scholarship and the Mainers are thrilled to be a part of her journey as she pursues her goals at USM.”

The David M. Ahern Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Sanford High School student for continuing their education after graduation and is named after former player David Ahern (2010), who passed away suddenly in 2016. The scholarship is based on financial need, extra-curricular activities, demonstrated leadership skills and academic strength. The $2,100 amount was inspired by the No. 21 jersey Ahern wore during his contribution to the Mainers.

More information about the scholarship can be found on the Mainers website at sanfordmainers.com.
