Shutout Secures Weekend Sweep of 'Skrats

SANFORD, Me. – How sweep it is.

After last night’s come-from-behind victory, Sanford left no doubt Sunday as the pitching staff held Winnipesaukee off the board, 5-0.

Following Brady Afthim’s (UConn) five shutout innings last night, his older brother Bryce Afthim (Southern Maine) contributed seven scoreless frames as the Mainers held Muskrats scoreless for the last 17 innings.

It was a similar start for the Moose as they jumped out to an early lead. In the bottom of the second, a single from Jayson Kramer (St. Johns) drove in Jake Rainess (Maine), later Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) would walk in Joey Rezek (East Carolina), 2-0.

Fast forward to the bottom of the fourth, Sanford would add another pair of runs. First, Alex Knapp (George Mason) scored on an RBI groundout from Quinn McDaniel (Maine), and once again Polk brought a run in, this time Devan Bade (Binghamton) on a sacrifice fly, 4-0.

Afthim would bow out after the seventh, as he finished his night allowing no runs on five hits, with seven punchouts and zero walks.

The Mainers would tack on their fifth and final run in the bottom half of the seventh as Polk picked up his third RBI of the night as his single brought McDaniel home to score.

Ryan Butler (Liberty) got through the eighth before Brian Craven (Davidson) worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to give Sanford its seventh win in the last eight games.

The win puts Sanford into third place in the North Division standings with an 8-10 record, while Winnipesaukee drops to 7-9.

The Mainers will enjoy a pair of off days before getting back on the saddle to face the North Shore Navigators at Fraser Field on Wednesday night, Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) is expected to start.

Sanford took the first meeting between the two sides on Thursday night, 3-1, behind the strong outing from Sonny Fauci (St. Johns).
