The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) is a summer collegiate wood bat baseball league that recruits the best players in the country. Teams are located in scenic communities in all six New England states and provide players with a professional environment to advance their skills while competing against elite players in front of MLB scouts. Off the diamond, the NECBL is dedicated to being a civic leader by providing the best family entertainment value for our region, as well as generously giving back to worthwhile causes. We are proud of the quality of the baseball we play; we are equally proud of our collegiate athletes who enrich and ennoble our region as community leaders and mentors for our kids.
The NECBL was founded in 1993 under the leadership of Emmy Award-winning television producer/director Joseph Consentino, a former St. John's University and Boston Red Sox minor league outfielder. George Foster, the 1977 National League MVP, was the NECBL’s first Commissioner. Comprised of entirely non-profit organizations, the NECBL is supported in part by Major League baseball and have also received grants from both the Yawkey Foundation and the Red Sox Foundation.
Play started in 1994 and today the NECBL is nationally recognized as one of the premier summer collegiate leagues in the country. The NECBL plays a 42-game regular season with an annual All-Star Game, and a post-season that awards the champion the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup, which is named after the father of former League President and former MLB Commissioner, Fay Vincent, Jr. National and international exhibition tours have also been a part of the NECBL, including: Team USA, Team Canada, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain and the U.S. Military All-Stars. All games are played at night, thus allowing players to work, take classes, or train at the gym. Today, the NECBL not only provides student-athletes an environment to pursue their Major League Baseball dreams, but has become woven into the fabric of our scenic communities throughout New England by providing fun affordable family entertainment for its residents and role models for their youth. Each year, more than 200,000 fans attend a NECBL ballpark and another 26,000 friends and family follow the season on their computers and phones anywhere in the world.
Approximately 100 NECBL are selected each year in the Major League Baseball amatuer draft. Following the 2013 MLB season, 99 alumni representing 29 MLB ball clubs have suited up in the Major Leagues. The NECBL has produced nearly 20 first round draft picks; twice the first pick of the MLB Draft was an NECBL product [Strasberg (Nationals) and Appel (Astros)]. Six NECBL alumni have played in World Series; six more have been Major League All-Stars. Numerous graduates have also appeared in the College World Series, World Baseball Classic and Arizona Fall League. Additionally, four more NECBL players or associates serve as the General Managers or Assistant GMs of Major League teams.
The NECBL is one of ten leagues affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB) – an alliance of college summer wood bat leagues which operates under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) legislation. It is funded in part by Major League Baseball and is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation that is primarily dependent on donations from individuals, businesses and foundations in each team’s community.
