Published By: Joe DeLeone
NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport wore its third consecutive loss on Friday night after falling to the Ocean State Waves (16–12) by a score of 9–5. It was a struggle on the mound for the Gulls as the collective gave up a total of nine runs in the ballgame. Holden Powell fell to 1 – 2 after giving up eight earned runs on six hits. Jerry Burke shined after relieving Powell, giving up just one unearned run in 3.1 innings and while registering four strikeouts.
Offensively, the Gulls put up a decent outing with nine hits and two home runs. A majority of the production came off the bats of Tim Tawa and Dillon Plew, who both finished with a home run in the game.
Despite trailing 1–0 early after giving up a solo shot in the top of the first, the Gulls started the game off hot offensively. With two runners on, Tawa blasted a three-run homerun over the left field fence to take a 3–1 lead.
Newport then faltered defensively in the third inning. The Waves would rack up four runs in the top of third to make the game 5–3. Three more runs scored for Ocean State in the fifth, including a solo home run which increased its lead to 8–3
The Gulls struck back in the sixth with another solo homerun, this one by Dillon Plew, for his first of the season. Each team then went back and forth scoring one more run each to make the final 9–5.
Tomorrow night, the Gulls (13 – 17) travel to Rogers Field to take on the Danbury Westerners (13 – 19). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
