Team Pennsylvania and Western Selects Battle to Classic Finish in Double OT
In an early morning matchup with the Western Selects, Team Pennsylvania put on a dazzling display and nothing separated the two teams until double overtime put a disappointing end to what was an entertaining game. Team PA lead 2-1 after one period thanks to goals from Easton Reichardt and Gavin Thomas. In the second frame, D'Angelo Fluhme scored to extend the Pennsylvania lead to 3-1 with one period remaining.
In the third, two goals from the Western Selects sent the game into 3-on-3 OT. When nothing was decided, the game entered the always entertaining 2-on-2 overtime portion. Despite their best efforts, Team PA cam up on the short end of the stick after allowing a goal with just over 30 seconds left in the 2-on-2 madness.
"That was a real gut wrenching loss, we just couldn't apply the pressure we needed in the 3rd to finish them off," said Coach Edwards following the game. "Credit to Western Selects for a great comeback; they have had our number over the past two seasons. I am really proud of our effort though; the shot blocks from some of our guys was inspiring and we got great goaltending again from Saulnier."
Team Pennsylvania earned a point in the overtime defeat and will finish preliminary round play with a game against Toronto Pro Hockey later tonight at 8:50pm MT/10:50pm ET. "The margin between winning and losing is just so small at this event. We need to regroup and get after it again tonight vs Pro Hockey," said Coach Edwards.
