Media Positions Available

The Newport Gulls Broadcast Team is always looking for volunteer production staff and interns for the upcoming season. For some positions, prior experience is requried, but on-site training is provided for most positions. If you're interested in video production, editing, live broadcast production, camera work, or if you just want to spend your summers at the ballpark, the Newport Gulls Broadcast Team has a position for you! The great baseball our team plays on the field is captured by a unique team of more than 20 interns, volunteers and staff members that make up the Newport Gulls Broadcast Network.

Volunteers and interns receive a meal card good for one full meal per game at the Newport Gulls concession stand, staff polo shirt, framed team photo, hat and memorabilia, invitation to select team events, direct access to meet players and coaches, and training and experience working in the finest media operation in summer collegeiate baseball.  If you're interested in becoming part of the team, or want to know more, email the General Manager at gm@newportgulls.com or Director of Baseball Operations at operations@newportgulls.com

Production Crew

Executive Producer: A position typically held by the team Director or Assistant Director of Broadcast Operations, the Executive Producer controls content and scripting for the broadcast in collaboration with the Production Coordinator and Broadcast Team, and manages all production staff and equipment. The Executive Producer is also responsible for purchasing new television equipment, overseeing online video production on the team website and YouTube, and coordinates rebroadcasts of games on local access television. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Producer: The broadcast Producer acts in collaboration with the Executive Producer and Broadcast Team to manage the production staff on game nights, and is directly responsible for the production of that evening's game or presentation. The Producer position is typically filled by a senior member of the broadcast production crew, and along with the Executive Producer, typically arrives at the field hours before game time to prepare for a live broadcast. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Associate Producer: The Associate Producer role typically involves live production control room duties, including graphics, instant replay, video tape and technical directing. The Associate Producer must have knowledge and experience in live broadcast production, and often is responsible for producing on-air content instanteously and independently from the rest of the production team, requiring close attention to detail, excellent typing and writing skills, and quick reaction to live, on-field events. The Associate Producer position is typically filled by a senior volunteer or Newport Gulls broadcast intern. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Director: The Director assists the Executive Producer in the live broadcast of games, and most often controls the multi-input camera switcher and communicates directly with camera operators. The Director must be an excellent multi-tasker, able to work closely with the Producer, Associate Producer, and Broadcast Team to maintain broadcast quality. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Statistician: Frequently held concurrently by the team's Official Scorer, the Statistician works directly with the Broadcast Team to provide live stats, historical background, hit streaks, pregame and postgame show analysis and stats, and key figures like total game time, attendance and game totals. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Camera Operator: Newport Gulls camera operators are required to man one of five cameras located throughout the ballpark on game nights and at special events. Camera operators must be able to follow the action quickly on field, should have a general knowledge of baseball and be able to anticipate plays and direction of the ball, and must be able to follow direction via headset communication with the Director, Producers, and Broadcast Team. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Audio Technician: The Audio Technician's responsibilities include mixing field, effects and crowd mics with broadcasters' headset, lapel and handheld mics, running XLR audio cables for pregame and postgame show interviews, and coordinating bumper music, radio ads, highlight audio and liners during live broadcasts. The Audio Technician must also work with the Producers to maintain broadcast quality throughout the game.The position is currently AVAILABLE

Onsite Engineer: The Onsite Engineer assists the Producers in setting up cable runs and equipment prior to game broadcasts, and assists with managing live broadcast streams, quality control, correcting in-game malfunctions, equipment maintenance and breakdown following productions. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Video Editor: Video Editors operate from the Control Room during live broadcasts, providing content for online consumption and editing highlight reels, and operate from the team Front Office, preparing special video packages, highlight clips, DVD production and special projects. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Production Assistant: The Production Assistant must ensure all production staff that do not have access to food and beverages during live broadcasts are attended to, must assist the Onsite Engineer in responding to equipment malfunctions, wrangles cables during pregame and postgame show interviews, coordinates lighting in conjunction with the Producers, and assists with operations in the Control Room.The position is currently AVAILABLE

Team Videographer: The Team Videographer is responsible for providing independent video coverage of Newport Gulls events and games, including providing field-level video footage and special coverage, providing feature content for the Broadcast Team and team website, and alternate camera angles for later use by Video Editors. The position is currently NOT AVAILABLE

Broadcast Security: Broadcast Security staff are required to prevent unauthorized access to the Control Room, Press Box and camera positions, maintain production quality in-game by keeping fans away from the broadcast booth and effects microphones, and provide perimeter control for pregame and postgame show interview shots. Broadcast Security is typically augmented by the Gulls team security staff. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Broadcast Team

Play-by-Play Broadcaster: The Play-by-Play Broadcaster is responsible for working with media from visiting teams, traveling with the team to all away games, and managing content, scripts, and guests for pregame and postgame shows, as well as providing play-by-play commentary for the first three and last three innings of all home games and color commentary for the middle three innings. The position also requires covering special events, team gatherings, and off-season team events. The broadcaster is responsible for the mixing of audio, bumper music and play-out of audio commercials during all home games. The Broadcaster also fulfills Team Publicist duties when needed regarding the writing and/or editing of press releases and game stories for home and away games. This includes press release distribution and uploading game stories and press releases to the website and social media. The Play-By-Play Broadcaster works directly with the Director of Media and Broadcast Operations and the Director of Operations and reports to the General Manager. 

Assistant Broadcaster: The Assistant Broadcaster position requires knowledge of the game of baseball, league history and the current team, and entails providing color commentary as a third person in the booth during all home games, filling in for the Play-by-Play Broadcaster on select away games, and filling in for the visiting team broadcaster for middle inning play-by-play and second person in the booth for select home games and exhibitions. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Pregame and Postgame Show Host: The Pregame and Postgame Show Host introduces the other members of the Broadcast Team, provides commentary in between segments, fills air time during rain and fog delays, manages callers during call-in segments, and assists in hosting special events. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Announcer: The Announcer is the Voice of the Newport Gulls Broadcast, providing voice-over introduction to the Broadcast Team, voice overs for commercial spots, liners and sweepers. The position is currently NOT AVAILABLE

Field Reporter: The Field Reporter assists with pregame and postgame interviews, in-game interviews with players, coaches and fans, and other special projects and feature video stories for the broadcast and team website. The position is currently AVAILABLE

Media Operations Team

Director of Media Relations: The Director of Media Relations oversees all aspects of the Media Operations Team and maintains direct relationships with members of the media to secure regular coverage of Newport Gulls games and events. The Director of Media Relations is also responsible for managing all web communications, broadcast operations, and maintaining the team website. The position is currently held by Shannon Carlson & Tom Lima. 

Director of Public Relations: The Director of Public Relations assists the Newport Gulls Front Office in providing community relations and exposure to major events, game nights, fan services and special events, in addition to maintaining strong connections with local media, community leaders and organizations. The Director of Public Relations also directs marketing strategy, imaging and provides advice to the Front Office in other public relations-related areas. The position is currently held by Kristine Hendrickson.

Director of Broadcast Operations: The Director of Broadcast Operations directly oversees the entire Broadcast Production Crew, collaborates with the Broadcast Team to manage and improve game and event broadcasts, and manages and inventories equipment, operational space and storage. The position is currently held by Tom Lima.

Team Publicist and Social Media Coordinator: The job of the Team Publicist includes writing press releases and game stories for all Newport Gulls home games, away games, and features about team staff, players, coaches, owners and events. The Team Publicist and Social Media Coordinator also assists in managing the team's website, Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts. The position requires a strong knowledge of the game of baseball, league structure and writing ability. The position is currently open for the 2021 season.

Official Scorer: Considered a quasi-league official, the Official Scorer must provide impartial scoring decisions and live score updates to the NECBL stat service, and is responsible for keeping both an electronic and written record of every play of the game. The position is currently open for the 2021 season.

Public Address Announcer: The Public Address Announcer is responsible for adhering to all sections of the NECBL Public Address Code of Compliance, in addition to providing safety, batter, substitution and sponsor information and introductions during pregame ceremonies at all home games. The position is currently held by Don O'Hanley.

Scoreboard Operator: The Scoreboard Operator is responsible for operating the Cardines Field scoreboard for all Newport Gulls home games and maintaining visual contact with umpires, team officials and plays on the field. The position is currently open for the 2021 season.

Press Box Manager: The Press Box Manager is responsible for allocating space and resources in the Press Box for all team, local and visiting media, checking press passes and badges, maintaining decorum, and fulfilling requests made my media personnel and scouts. The position is currently open for the 2021 season.
