PLYMOUTH, Mass. – Plymouth 1B Hernen Sardines’ hit an RBI fielder’s choice with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pilgrims walked-off against the Newport Gulls by a final score of 2–1 at Forges Field. The Gulls received a quality outing from starter RHP David Palmer who pitched six innings and logged a no-decision, allowing just one earned run on three hits with eight strikeouts.

With the game still scoreless entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Pilgrims’ C James Venuto hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence to put Plymouth ahead, 1–0. Being held hitless through eight innings, Newport struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Plymouth starter LHP Jonathan Bermudez who struck out four batters through six innings of work. Pilgrims’ reliever RHP Christian Rosati relieved Bermudez in the seventh, and hurled the next two innings scoreless.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Gulls would respond. LF Kameron Misner singled through the right side of the infield to record Newport’s only hit of the ballgame. After 1B Liam McGill reached on a fielder’s choice, the Gulls’ offense would find success against Plymouth reliever RHP Seth Pinkerton. C Nicholas Raposo, 2B Michael Webb and 3B Adam Duarte all recorded two out walks to score McGill, tying the game 1–1.

But, Plymouth would answer in the bottom of the frame as Venuto worked a leadoff walk and eventually advanced to third on pinch-hitter Sal Gozzo’s double down the right field line. After a strikeout, an intentional walk issued to Plymouth 3B Tyler Wyatt set the scene for Sardines’ game-winning RBI fielder’s choice to score Venuto.

Newport reliever RHP Trevor Tinder took the loss surrendering one earned run on one hit in 2.1 innings while striking out four hitters. Pinkerton logged the win for the Pilgrims allowing one earned run in the ninth inning. Pacing the Gulls’ offense was Misner, who went 1–3 with a walk. Newport was outhit in the contest 4–1.

Tomorrow night, the Gulls (0–2) will be back in action when they host the Upper Valley Nighthawks at 6:35 p.m. from Cardines Field. Fans can watch and listen to the game on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
