NEWPORT, R.I. – Two pitchers from Bryant University will stay in Rhode Island this summer as the Newport Gulls have signed Nathan Wrighter and Tyler Mattison to their 2018 roster.

Wrighter, a right-handed junior, stands at six-foot-seven and hails from Windsor, N.Y.; a graduate of Windsor Central High School. Heading into this weekend’s series against the University of Delaware, Wrighter has appeared in five games and has given up three hits and five runs while striking out four.

As a sophomore, Wrighter emerged as a top reliever in New England. In 26 appearances, he earned a 2—0 record with a 1.80 ERA in 40 innings of relief while holding opponents to a .224 batting average. He was named to the All-New England Conference Second Team and the NEC Academic Honor Roll. Wrighter followed his tremendous sophomore campaign with a strong summer performance for the Oneonta Outlaws of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Striking out 39 in 48 innings and walking 14 batters, Wrighter finished with a 3.75 ERA and three wins on the season.

Before Bryant, Wrighter was a four-time division All-Star at Windsor Central High School where he led the Black Knights in hitting all four years and posted a 1.21 ERA as a senior. Perfect Game ranked him the 13th RHP prospect in New York. In addition to baseball, the Empire State native was a standout basketball player, helping his team win three division titles as the Black Knight’s leading scorer.

Freshman RHP Tyler Mattison will be joining Wrighter in Newport this summer following his rookie season as a Bulldog. Mattison, like Wrighter, is an intimidating figuring on the mound, standing at six-foot-four. He is also a product of the Empire State, residing in Ann, N.Y. Mattison has appeared in four games in 2018 and has recorded one save in seven innings of work.

Mattison was a three-sport standout at Fort Ann High School where he played baseball, soccer, and basketball. As a senior, Mattison went 9—0 with a 0.36 ERA while striking out 111 batters in 58 innings. He led the Cardinals to a Class D New York State Championship in 2017 and was named the Class D New York State Player of the Year. The righty also earned All-Star and All-League honors in each of his four seasons at Fort Ann and was ranked among Perfect Game’s Top 500 players in the country and the 26th overall prospect in New York. Only one month removed from his high school graduation this past June, Mattison joined the Glens Falls Dragons of the Perfect Game Collegiate League. He went 3—2 tallying 41 strikeouts in 28.2 innings and was named one of the league’s top prospects.
