Newport, RI – Two University of Missouri Columbia (Mizzou) Tigers will travel to New England for the summer to play for the Newport Gulls – RHP Tommy Springer of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Outfielder Josh Holt of Hampton, Georgia.
Tommy Springer is currently a sophomore at Mizzou, choosing to become a Tiger after graduating from Eastview High School. Last season, Springer’s first collegiate season, he appeared in 12 games including four starts. Springer was undefeated (4-0) and finished the year with an ERA of 3.09 with 38 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. The righty was outstanding when pitching against right-hand batters limiting them to a batting average of only .145 (11 for 76). He also picked up victories in back to back starts, allowing only one hit over 5.0 shutout innings vs. Kanas State on April 3, 2019, and surrendering just two earned runs over five frames at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on April 9.
Last summer, Springer stayed near campus in Cape Girardeau, MO to play with the Cape Catfish of the Prospect League. He finished the season with 25 strikeouts over four starts games, recording two wins. Off the field, Springer majors in Business Administration.
The second Tiger to join the Gulls this summer is outfielder Josh Holt. Mizzou was Holt’s top choice, deciding to become a Tiger over George Washington University. Holt appeared in 36 games during the 2019 season which included 25 starts in his first year at Mizzou. 23 starts came in left field and the remainder as the designated hitter.
Holt was outstanding when leading off innings for the Tigers, hitting .486 as well as when there were runners in scoring position, hitting an even .300 in those situations. He will bring speed and athleticism to the Gulls lineup this summer having notched the fastest 60-yard dash at Perfect Game’s National Underclassmen Showcase while in high school- 6.46. As just a freshman, Holt showed maturity at the end of last season with a critical multi-RBI game vs Southern Missouri on May 1st. He spent the summer with the Muskegon Clippers in the Great Lakes League. In just 11 games played he led the team with six stolen bases. Just like his teammate and future Gull Tommy Springer, Holt is majoring in Business Administration.
