Two Former Gulls Pitch for Mariners

A Pair of Alumni Currently Playing in Majors for Seattle

NEWPORT, RI- Anthony Misiewicz and Taylor Guilbeau played for the Newport Gulls in consecutive seasons and are both currently pitching in the Major Leagues for the Seattle Mariners - debuting in consecutive years as well.

First was Taylor Guilbeau who debuted on August 17, 2019, while the Mariners were visiting the Toronto Blue Jays. He completed one full inning in his debut and proceeded to throw a total of 12.1 for the remainder of the season as the club fell short of the 2019 Playoffs. Guilbeau held batters to a .213 batting average and struck out seven while walking just three opposing hitters. Guilbeau was drafted out of high school by the New York Yankees in Round 39 of the 2011 MLB Draft but chose to attend The University of Alabama just a few states over from his hometown of Baton Rouge, LA. Unfortunately, Guilbeau’s 2020 has been cut short due to injury. He threw 7.2 innings in eight appearances before a shoulder strain ended his season.

Guilbeau joined the Gulls during the summer of 2013 and pitched in three games over the course of his time in Newport. He went 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts.

More recently, Anthony Misiewicz was called up to pitch against the Houston Astros on July 24. Misiewicz was a member of the 2014 Newport Gulls while pitching collegiately for Michigan State University. The left-handed pitcher is a native of Detroit, MI, and was drafted by the Mariners in the 18th Round of the 2015 MLB Draft.

While with Newport, Misiewicz appeared and started in four games which spanned 27.1 innings pitched. He completed the summer with an 0-1 record, 2.96 ERA, and struck out nearly a batter an inning (26) while walking just nine opposing hitters. The Gulls went on to win the NECBL Championship the same summer Misiewicz was a part of the squad.

Since being called up, Misiewicz has proved to be a go-to arm for the third-place Seattle Mariners. His 19 appearances are the most of any Mariner and have all came out of the bullpen. The 6’1” 200 pound Misiewicz has recorded 23 strikeouts in his 18.1 innings pitched thus far.

There have now been three former Gulls to make their Major League Debut in 2020 (LHP Kris Bubic & LHP Kyle Hart) which brings the total number of Newport Gulls that have reached the Major Leagues to 24.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community of Newport County via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are six-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
