RHP Bo Brutti Returns for Second Stint with Gulls

Newport, RI—A South Kingstown native, Bo Brutti (RHP), from the University of Rhode Island will return to the bump for his second summer with the Newport Gulls.

Brutti spent most of his summer in the Valley League in 2019 but was a late season addition to the Newport roster. Brutti pitched in the final regular season game against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. The South Kingston hurler logged two innings of work and struck out two.

So far in 2021, the URI Ram has made five appearances out of the bullpen including appearances against No. 13 East Carolina University and in-state rival Bryant University.

In the shortened 2020 season, Brutti started to catch fire before the season was ended early due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In his final three outings, he allowed just one earned run over four innings pitched. The lone run came against the nationally ranked Arizona Wildcats led by 2020 New York Yankees 1st round pick Austin Wells.

In high school, Brutti was a part of a South Kingstown High School program that appeared in three straight State Championship games. South Kingstown became the first public school in Rhode Island to do so in 44-years. His high school career was highlighted by pitching a complete game shutout in the 2018 Division I State Championship game at McCoy Stadium. The right hander was honored with the MVP award after allowing just three hits and captured his high schools first state championship since 2002.

Brutti continues the strong tradition of in-state players playing for the Gulls. This will now be at least the 11thyear in a row, a native player from Rhode Island will put on Gulls jersey. The University of Rhode Island has now been represented in Newport for the sixth time in the past seven years as well.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community of Newport County via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are six-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
