Gulls Fall to Schooners, 6-4

By Zach Letson - Team Publicist

NEWPORT RI -After falling behind 5-1, Newport (2-1) nearly came back but ultimately fell short for the first time in 2021 to Mystic, (3-1) 6-4.

The Gulls went with the same mix on the mound that got them the win on opening night in Holyoke. Brandyn Garcia got the start for Newport and went three innings before handing it off to Peter Sakellaris and Grant Umberger who pitched the final five frames.

The Gulls responded to three Schooners runs in the third inning with their first run of the game in the fourth. After recording his first hit as a Gull in his first game with the team, Justin Guerrera scored on an error from Schooners third baseman Christopher Brito to cut the three run deficit to two.

Mystic added one in the fifth, followed by one in the sixth. It could have been more if not for Sam Cochrane, who made a diving catch with two Schooners on base to end the threat.

The Gulls made another comeback attempt in the seventh and eighth. Conor Kiely connected on an RBI single, and Lewis Barnum followed with an RBI groundout.

Newport got one more on an RBI single from Billy Butler in the eighth. The Gulls had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth but came up just short with the tying run stranded at second base.

The Gulls meet the Schooners again tomorrow night, this time at Cardines Field. First pitch is set for 6:35pm.
