WAKEFIELD, R.I. – Newport (6-3) fell 12-1 to Ocean State (3-7) 12 to 1 on Thursday night at Old Mountain Field. Nick Payero earned the win for the Waves after going five shutout innings, while Gulls starter Blake Mahmood was dealt with the loss.
After Mahmood escaped an early first inning jam, the Waves plated six runs in the second, highlighted by a solo home run by Waves left fielder Travis Honeyman.
Ocean State’s hot-hitting continued with five runs between the fourth and fifth innings. In the latter, Andrew Jenner cleared the right field fence for his first home run of the summer to extend the Waves lead to 11-0.
Newport’s lone run came in the top of the ninth when Spenser Smith earned a bases-loaded walk to put Newport on the board.
Ocean State’s win evens up the Pell Bridge Series at 1-1. The Gulls are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Martha's Vineyard for a Friday night battle against the Sharks. The game marks the first matchup between the two teams since the 2019 NECBL playoff semifinals. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Shark Tank.
