NEWPORT, RI– During this past week, the Newport Gulls finalized their coaching staff for the franchise’s 21st season in the City by the Sea. This season will include two new additions, field manager, Frank Holbrook and pitching coach, Dan Gusovsky. They will be joined by returning hitting coach, Ted Regan. Rhode Island College’s head baseball coach, and Middletown, Rhode Island native, Frank Holbrook will be the ninth manager in team history.
The lone returning coach from the 2021 campaign is hitting coach and current assistant for the Tritons of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, Teddy Regan. Rounding out the coaching staff for 2022 is Dan Gusovsky, who is entering his first season with the Gulls and will serve as the team’s pitching coach.
As the winningest franchise in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, the Gulls’ are excited to welcome Holbrook as everywhere Holbrook goes, success has followed.
Since taking the reins at Rhode Island College as the team’s head coach, the Anchorman have improved their record each year. After three consecutive seasons in the bottom half of the Little East Conference, Holbrook elevated RIC into a mainstay at the top of the conference standings. This past season, he led the Anchorman to a school-record 29 wins, including an astounding 17-2 record on their home turf.
In his previous stop, his alma mater Wheaton College (MA), he led one of the most lethal pitching staffs in the entire New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. In his five seasons at Sidell Stadium, Holbrook coached 21 All-Conference players, 10 All-New England players, and two All-Americans. He captained the recruiting department during his time with the Lyons, winning three regular-season conference titles, and one NEWMAC conference tournament in 2016.
While playing for Newport, Holbrook’s season ended with a ring, as his 2012 team won the Gulls fifth Fay Vincent Sr. Cup. Newport also finished #1 in the rankings of Summer Collegiate Baseball Teams in 2012 by Perfect Game USA.
This summer, the Gulls’ sluggers will be learning from one of the most experienced men in the business. Ted Regan heads back to Cardines Field for his second season and brings with him 26 years of coaching America’s pastime. His plethora of experience all over the country will help some of these hitters take their game to the next level. During the past few summers prior to joining the Gulls, Regan assisted with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League and the New Bedford Bay Sox prior to their departure from the NECBL.
On the pitching side, the Andover Massachusetts native, Dan Gusovsky will join Newport for his first season in the NECBL. The former Swarthmore College, and Wheaton College (MA) assistant possesses years of experience in a multitude of positions. Just like Holbrook, Gusovsky seems to find success at every stop he makes- playing and coaching. Gusovsky coached at three schools before joining the staff at Lehigh University. In 2016, Gusovsky assisted William & Mary where he helped the team capture their first conference title since 2001. Gusovsky and Holbrook are extremely familiar with each other as the two were a battery combination for Wheaton College during their historic run to the College World Series in 2012.
A revamped coaching staff led by Holbrook will be tasked with navigating the new three division alignment the NECBL has adopted for the 2022 season. Newport will play opponents in their division either six or seven times, and teams outside of the division twice during the regular season. The countdown to opening day has begun as the Major League stars of Tomorrow flock to Newport in less than 20 days.
