NEWPORT, RI – The Newport Gulls 2024 season is powered by A1 Roofing’s Solar Division and today’s signings feature two pitchers, Ty Starke from Louisville, and Cal Randall from UCLA.

Louisville native Ty Starke decided to stay close to home and play for his hometown Cardinals. He was a state champion in 2022 at Saint Xavier High School and as a senior, he showcased his potential in the regional semi-finals where he pitched a seven-inning complete game with 12 strikeouts and just one unearned run.  Before his legendary senior season tournament run, Starke was a perfect 7-0 as a junior with a 1.24 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 45.1 innings, ranking him as the No. one player in Kentucky at the time by Perfect Game.

Starke has thrown 19.1 innings this season for the Cardinals striking out 17 batters. All 16 appearances this season have been out of the bullpen. He is 1-0 on the season with a 3.72 ERA. In eight of his outings this season he has given Louisville over an inning of work out of the pen.  The 6-6 lefty is going to be a force on the mound this summer.

Cal Randall arrived at UCLA after being one of the highest ranked prospects in the class of 2023. He was the #84 ranked prospect in the country and one of the top 25 Right Hand Pitchers. In his freshman year, he has pitched 5.2 innings in four appearances for the Bruins. Striking out nine batters in his four appearances, Randall has a some dangerous put away pitches.

At De La Salle High School, Randall put up quite an impressive resume. As an underclassmen, he was a two-time All-American. He was also named to the All Prospect team at the 2022 Perfect Game Showcase, and named to the All-CIF NCS First Team. Randall was projected to be a pick in the first 10 rounds of the 2023 MLB Draft before withdrawing his name in order to go to UCLA and be “coached by the best in the nation”, part of the #1 ranked recruiting class in 2023.

Starke and Randall make a strong Gulls pitching staff even stronger. Stay tuned for more Solar Signings as A1 Roofing continues to power the Gulls throughout the off-season and into the title defense this summer.
