NEWPORT, R.I. — After winning both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Mystic Schooners, the Newport Gulls officially clinched the Coastal Division. Newport has now won the division for a third consecutive year and this guarantees the Gulls a top-3 seed in the 2024 NECBL Playoffs and home field advantage in the first round. The Gulls are currently 26-15 and the No. 2 seed in the league standings with three (potentially two) games left in the regular season.
Before the postseason begins, Newport wraps up the regular season with home games against Ocean State on Sunday and Mystic on Monday and a potential trip to Vermont on Wednesday for a makeup game that may or may not be played depending on playoff seeding scenarios. The playoffs begin on Thursday, August 1st with Game 1 of the first round best-of-3 series taking place at Cardines Field against an opponent yet to be determined.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are seven-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
