NEWPORT RI: February is here, and the Newport Gulls are just under four months from another season of baseball at Historic Cardines Field. General Manager Chuck Paiva and Vice President Chris Patsos have been working on building the baseball team, but now the organization begins to shift focus and works to secure volunteer team for the 2025 Summer. As a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit, the Gulls rely on volunteers to help execute the ballpark preparation and operations. Specifically, opportunities are available to join the Gulls Grounds Crew, Souvenir Stand, and Ticket Booth staff.
“Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Gulls organization”, said General Manager Chuck Paiva. “It would be impossible to operate without Host Families, Volunteers, and College Interns”, Paiva continued.
The 2025 season is set to kick off on June 3rd as the Gulls look to defend their back-to-back titles in pursuit of a three-peat. The Gulls are slated to take on the Valley Blue Sox in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The Gulls will celebrate Opening Night at Cardines Field the following day on June 4th against the Vermont Mountaineers. However, there is still a lot to be done before the Gulls take the field; including building a Grounds Crew, adding quite a few volunteers, and working toward filling the Summer Intern Staff!
Newport’s roster consists of “The Major League Stars of Tomorrow”. Collegiate Student-Athletes from the nation’s top colleges and universities play a 44-game season as they chase their dreams of becoming Major League Baseball Players. These players live with local families during their time with the team.
Home Games are played at Historic Cardines Field in the heart of Newport. As one of America’s Oldest Baseball Stadiums, the City of Newport owns and operates the facility. However, after the City prepares the field for the Gulls on Summer mornings, it is up to the Gulls' Grounds Crew to get the diamond in pristine and game-ready condition following pregame batting practice and warmups. The Crew also touches up the playing surface during the 5th Inning.
Games are played on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. First pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM regularly and gates open at 5:00 PM. Grounds Crew members are asked to arrive to the stadium for roughly 4:00PM/4:30PM.
Being a part of the Gulls Family as a member of the Grounds Crew or Volunteer Staff makes for a special summer. The Gulls encourage all who are interested in helping in either capacity to contact Eric Lindley at operations@newportgulls.com, or by calling 401-363-2134.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are eight-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
