ATOM MINERS #1 NIP MANIACS 2-1 IN LEAGUE PLAYOFF ACTION
Julia Yang skates to check Miner’s #1 rushing center-man Landon MacIsaac as he cuts through center ice in ATOM METRO playoff action
Monday evening at the Dominion Rink a large gathering of family and friends showed up to support two of our ATOM METRO hockey teams in a Cape Breton Atom Metro Hockey League Playoffs.
Both teams started the game playing a close checking game as each traded off a few scoring chances during the opening ten minutes. Then with 4:20 remaining and the Miner’s #1 team killing off a penalty Cole MacDougall would make an outlet pass to team-mate Landon MacIsaac who broke in over the blue-line and ripped a high shot that found the top corner.
In the second period both teams continued to display some nice playoff hockey making nice plays both offensively and defensively to keep the score close. Then with 5:25 showing on the board Mainiacs’s #1 winger Julia Yang spotted Dominic Peach breaking up the middle, fed him a nice pass and sent Peach in a break-a-way to hoist his shot inside the right post to square the game at 1-1. On the next shift Miner’s #1 smooth-skating center-man Landon MacIssac would scoop up a loose puck at centre-ice break-in over the blue-line through a pair of defense and stretch the twine to score what would later prove to be the game winner.
In the third and final frame both teams had the fans sitting on the edge of their seats as they traded-off end to-end scoring chances. Late in the game the Mainiacs trailing by a goal, surrendered a two-on-one Miner’s give-and-go scoring chance only to have their goaltender Gabe Mackie make a spectacular post to post stretch save to keep his team in the hunt for the equalizer. In the final minute the Mainiacs had a late shot on goal but just couldn’t beat Miner’s#1 goaltender Drake Deveaux who played solid between the pipes to earn the important playoff victory.
Other Miner’s #1 players include: Mitchell Jenkins, Maddox Devereaux, Ben Peach, Niklas MacDonald, Blake MacDonald, Julia Nearing, Tyler MacNeil, Keigan Hoffman and Braedan Arsenault and Gabby Ford.
Other Mainiac players include: Logan MacAulay, Leane McDonald, Tyson Boland, Brianna Turner, Dylan MacLean, Braedon Hogan, Kendall Stubbard, Jesse White and Brooklyn Williams.
Best of Luck to both teams for the balance of your playoffs and 2015-16 hockey season !
