This hockey season our Glace Bay MInor Hockey Association has produced one of our most winning teams in recent history, namely the Glace Bay MINER's ATOM "AA" team which competed in the Cape Breton Island Atom "AA" Hockey League. In regular league play this season, the Miners finished in first place with an amazing 24-0-0 winning record. In addition to their commanding record in league play, the youngsters won Gold Medals back in December when they captured top honours in the Antigonish Bulldogs Invitational Atom "AA" tournament. The team compteted in several other tournaments falling victim to hotter teams which is just fine for youngsters of this age.
This weekend Glace Bay hockey fans will rooting for our young MINERS wishing best of success in hoping that your team will continue to build on the winning season.
Glace Bay's head coach Brian O'Neill states that "this season has seen everyone giving a total team effort from since the start of the year and that has been what the kids have been given us every night. Every game we could have a different player step up do something special to help the team out". The Miners have displayed plenty of offense on the regular season, as their team stats shows that their "Goals For" surpassed their next closest team, by over "100 goals" which is a most impressive league stat and team effort. As well their "Goals Against" record led the league displaying their strong goaltending and defensive game as their closet team rival was at least double their GA total. Coach O'Neill knows that in order to cash in on offense the players must be at the top of their game this weekend. O"Neill finishes by commenting "one of best assets is our team speed and the boys use it to their advantage really well".
This weekend in Port Hood, island ATOM "AA" hockey teams from Glace Bay, Sydney, CB County, CB West and Strait Pirates will compete in the Regional Hockey NS play-downs to crown the 2016-17 CAPE BRETON CUP winner. Cape Breton's winner will advance to play Pictou for the Northern Conference Championship in a one game showdown. That winning team will meet the top Southern/Central province winner at the Day of Champions to declare the NS PROVINCIAL ATOM "AA" CHAMPION.
