MINERS PLAY FOR CB CUP
MINERS PLAY FOR CB CUP
Glace Bay MINERS compete for Cape Breton Pee Wee "AAA CUP this weekend at the Emera Center, North Sydney.
This up-comming weekend in North Sydney our Glace Bay MINERS Pee Wee "AAA" will hunting for the 2016-17 Cape Breton CUP. Other teams vying for the Championship include the Sydney Steelers, Cape Breton County Islanders, Cape Breton West Islanders, Strait Pirates and the host Northside Vikings.
A spokesman for the Miners stated that the Glace Bay team ended up in first place, a large part due to our strong start in the season. The teams are all pretty close, most of our games were 1 or 2 point games. The regular season league winning Miners finished on top with a record of 17 wins, 3 losses in their 20 games. The team tallied "85 Goals For" good for second in the league however their strength was in their defensive and goaltending play leading the league with a lean "53 Goals Against". Including exhibition games and tournaments, the team we played a combined total of 42 games, with 30 Wins, 9 Losses and 3 Ties.
On the road this season the Miners made it to the semi-finals in the Antigonish Bulldogs Invitaional, competed in a PEI tourney and the B Gallagher Pee Wee Tourney in Coxheath. Glace Bay also made a fun trip to the 3rd Annual Winter Classic in Igonish, Cape Breton which was very enjoyable competing in an exhibition game against the CB County Islanders.
Reflecting back from the start of season until now the team started with 4 returning players from last year: Landon Clark, Darian McInnis, Mitchel MacDonald and Adam Hicks. The roster was staffed with 7 first year peewee players: Cate Burke, Lachlan Pilling, Parker Hutchings, Samantha Morrison, Brayden MacDonald, Blake Snow, Kale MacNeil plus the team added 4 players who moved up from last season's Peewee "A" Miners namely Khonnor White, Tyler Cormier, Jonathan Gallant and Brandon Royal. Rounding out the roster the team added two players from other local Pee Wee teams, Dean Mcfadgen and Lauren Barrett.
Miner's head coach Shane Clarke is looking forward to this weekend's playoff action and is hopeful his team can rise to the top as they did all year during regular season play. Clarke states "We have a young, skilled, fast team who are very eager to learn and have excelled this year clinching top spot in the league's regular season play". Coach Clarke also knows that playoff hockey can create surprises as all teams in the league are worthy of taking the CUP home.
Glace Bay hockey fans wish our Pee Wee AAA MINERS the Best of Luck this weekend !
